WEST PALM BEACH, Fl.---The Seahawks men's basketball team came up short against Webber International 69-68 in Sun Conference play. Northwood falls to 9-5 overall and 2-2 in Sun Conference play.
Fred Mattison came out fast scoring the games first seven points, before the Warriors chipped away eventually tying it at 18-18 with 10:44 remaining. The Seahawks answered right back with a 5-0 run regaining a 23-19 margin The Warriors took their first lead at 24-23, but Northwood came back knotting it at 27-27 with 4:52 showing. The Seahawks outscored their opponents 6-2 during the final five minutes, taking a 33-29 lead into halftime.
Marcus Hardy and Mattison combined for the first ten Northwood points of the new half taking their largest lead of the game of 43-33 with 17:02 left. Webber took their first lead of the new half at 47-46 and built up to their largest of the contest of 63-55 with 5:01 left. A pair of threes by Andrija Sarenac and two free throws by Mattison cut the deficit to 65-63 with 2:49 to go. The Warriors responded back pushing out to a 67-63 lead with 2:45 remaining.
Mattison started a 5-0 with his two free throws, before Sarenac converted two clutch free throws regaining a slim 68-67 lead with 17 second showing. Webber hit a jumper on the other end for a 69-68 advantage with four seconds to go. Chris Solomon had a chance to win it at the buzzer but his shot was blocked.
Northwood held a 38-33 advantage on the boards, while forcing their opponents into 11 turnovers. Mattison's double-double of 24 points and 16 rebounds led the way, while Marcus Hardy had 14 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Ian Umpierre had a game high eight assists, while scoring seven points.
The Seahawks return to action on Saturday, when they welcome Warner. The Sun Conference game is set for 4:00 p.m.
