#3 Men's Basketball Suffer First Loss to #12 Cornerstone 85-78

WEST PALM BEACH, FL.---The #3 Seahawks men's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season on Friday evening to #12 Cornerstone 85-78. The loss snaps a seven game winning streak and moves Northwood at 7-1 overall.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 10-2 lead, but Ian Umpierre scored six of the first ten Northwood points, while Chris Lee chipped in four cutting the deficit to 14-10 with 10:56 on the board. Cornerstone extended the lead out to 19-10, but Chris Solomon scored the next five points for the Seahawks, trailing 24-15 with 8:04 to go. Later in the half, Malte Ziegenhagen poured in seven straight, getting to within 26-22. However, the Seahawks would go in to the half trailing 42-35.

Coming out of the break, Northwood got the margin to 52-47 with 15:31 left in the game, but the Golden Eagles answered pushing their lead out to 64-49 midway through the final half. Solomon and Marcus Hardy both a made a pair of free throws, sparking a 9-0 run that was capped off by a Solomon layup making it 64-58 with 8:45 to go. The Seahawks kept cutting away at the deficit, when Solomon hit a three with 1:29 left making it 77-73.

With 41 seconds left, Umpierre layed the ball in, making it a one possession game at 80-77, but Cornerstone held on for the 85-78 win.

Ziegenhagen led the way with 23 points, while Solomon chipped in 15. Umpierre had a double double with 14 points and ten assists, and Hardy did too with 13 points and ten rebounds. Fred Mattison had two blocks on the defensive end, and Umpierre had six steals.

After the game, Umpierre and Hardy were named to the All-Tournament Team for the Seahawks .

Northwood returns to action to action on Monday, December 29, taking on Concordia Nebraska in the Dick Versace Holiday Classic. The tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
