ORANGE BEACH, AL.---The Northwood University women's soccer team upset the #2 seed William Carey 3-0 in the Round of 16. The Seahawks advance to play Martin Methodist in the quarterfinals Wednesday at 5:00 pm in Orange Beach, Alabama.
The Seahawks got on the board in the 8th minute when Johanna Engberg converted on a penalty kick for the early 1-0 lead. Erin Wells extended the margin to 2-0 in the 31st minute, when she chipped the keeper into the top shelf. Northwood held a 9-2 edge in shots, while maintaining the 2-0 advantage heading into the break.
Julia Axengren netted the final goal of the game in the 67th minute when she weaved through the defense into the 18 yard box and beat the keeper to the far post for the 3-0 shutout. The Seahawks defense held strong down the stretch facing nine shots, keeping the Crusaders out of the back of the net.
Northwood held a 13-11 edge in shots, with Amy Vaughan and Wells leading the way with three shots apiece. Engberg was close behind with two shots and Taylor Christian with one. Matilda Hjalte made six saves in net to keep the clean sheet.
