Women's Basketball Suffer Setback to Coastal Georgia 69-64

BRUNSWICK, GA---The Northwood women's basketball team (0-3) fell to Coastal Georgia (5-3) 69-64 on Tuesday evening. The Seahawks held a 34-32 lead at the halftime break but could not hold on in the second half.

In the first half, with the score tied at 9-9, the Seahawks went on an 11-0 run pushing out to their largest lead of the game at 20-9. Stephanie Granada got the run started scoring four straight points before Claudia Reque capped it off with 12:49 showing on the clock.

Coastal Georgia responded with a 13-2 stretch tying the game up at 22-22 with 8:43 to go in the first half. However, Northwood pushed back out in front with a 5-0 run and held off the Mariners for a 34-32 lead heading into intermission.

Coming out of the break, the Mariners controlled the first nine minutes before Northwood used an 11-2 span retaking the lead at 49-47 with 11:15 remaining. Both teams exchanged leads over the next four minutes, with the Seahawks taking their last lead at 55-54 with 7:23 to go. Down the stretch, Northwood fought hard keeping the game at one possession but Coastal Georgia prevailed in the end 69-64.

Three Northwood players recorded double digits on the night, with Atavia Blake leading the way with 17 points. Granada contributed 14 points while Chanel Brooks had 12 and a game high 17 rebounds. Emily May and Reque had two assists apiece.

"We gave the best effort tonight and we played well and haven't seen this since the Barry game, said head coach Courtney McDaniel." "We have been trying to find the chemistry and that came together tonight, but fell short and still have a lot of work to do." "Tonight I am proud of them and their energy and the way they played. Today we stayed together as a team and that is all I have to ask for." "I am also proud of Chanel Brooks who had a big game for us off the bench with the rebounds and energy."

The Seahawks next game will be their 2014/15 Sun Conference opener when they travel to Johnson & Wales. The game is scheduled for December 6 at 2:00 p.m.
