Seahawks Nation, the Fifth Annual Keiser Athletics Moment of the Year Tournament starts today. Over the next month, we will be asking you to determine the top moment of the year.
There were a lot of great moments this past season, but we had to narrow it down to 12.
Twelve moments from this past year have been put in a bracket-style format. Each week, fans can vote at KUSeahawks.com to pick who will advance to the next round.
This week, there are four matchups in the opening round.
Without further ado, here they are.....
No. 8 seed - Men's Lacrosse - Rundle breaks program record
NAIA All-American Ryan Rundle became the program's all-time leader in points scored during the team's 25-6 win over No. 5 Reinhardt on Senior Day. The senior scored his seventh goal of the game to cap off a 10-point outing as the Seahawks routed the Eagles.
No. 9 seed - Flag Football - Klam's Game-Winning TD vs Ottawa
With under five seconds left in the contest, NAIA Player of the Year Ashlea Klam caught the go-ahead touchdown on a two-yard TD pass from Ava Wallace. The win capped off a 2-0 opening day at the NAIA Invitational Tournament for the Seahawks, sending the No. 2 Ottawa (Kan.) Braves to the loser's bracket.
No. 5 seed - Football - Spencer 3rd Rushing TD
Shea Spencer, the Semifinals Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the Game, used his legs to bring Keiser back from 12-point deficit with a 41-yard touchdown run to start the fourth quarter. The score – his third rushing TD of the game – gave Keiser the 22-21 lead. Keiser went on to defeat the College of Idaho, 36-27, and advance to its fourth straight NAIA National Championship Game.
No. 12 seed - Women's Basketball - Avrach sets program record
Aly Avrach etched her name into the Keiser record books on January 3, draining a school-record nine three-pointers en route to a career-high 28 points in the Seahawks' commanding 85-27 victory over New College of Florida. She connected on 9-of-13 from beyond the arc and remarkably outscored the entire New College team by herself, finishing with 28 points to the Mighty Banyans collective 27. She earned Sun Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors for her performance.
No. 7 seed - Women's Swimming - Bersi wins 200 Fly
Luiza Bersi, the NAIA Swimmer of the Year, captured seven NAIA National Championships and earned eight All-America honors at this year's NAIA Tournament. The second-year Seahawk's performance was highlighted by her school-record time in the 200 Fly (2:00.91), finishing just .02 off the NAIA mark.
No. 10 seed - Men's Basketball - Baldwin makes SportsCenter Top 10
Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Year Cameron Baldwin sent the Student Life Center into a frenzy with a ferocious slam following a steal in the back court versus South Florida Bible College on November 10. Earning No. 9 on SportCenters' Top 10, the play sparked a 25-4 run as the Seahawks rolled to a 114-62 win.
No. 6 seed - Softball - Schaaf Walkoff Win
Making the program's second appearance in the NAIA National Tournament, senior Macy Schaaf made Seahawk's history driving in the game-winning run versus Benedictine (Kan.) in extra innings. With runners on second and third and no outs, Schaff singled to center field to score teammate Faith Campos and give Keiser its first win in NAIA postseason play, 4-3.
No. 11 seed - Wrestling - Sommers secures Top 6 finish at Nationals
Jordan Sommers fought through a challenging 285-pound bracket to earn All-American honors, highlighted by a sudden victory win over No. 5 Nico Rodriguez of Eastern Oregon that secured his spot on the podium. He finished the tournament in 6th place, becoming the third All-American in program history.
The top four seeds will get a bye this week and will face the winners of this week's matchups.
Opening Round Byes
No. 1 seed - Women's Soccer - Preibe Save and Celebration
The Keiser Seahawks claimed their third NAIA National Championship on December 8, claiming the Red Banner on penalty kicks, 3-2, over No. 9 Cumberlands (Ky.). After going through two overtimes without a winner (1-1), the national title came down to penalty kicks, where a save from
Madison Priebe denied the Patriots and secured the win for KU.
The No. 1 moment will face the winner on No. 8 versus No. 9 next week.
No. 2 seed - Women's Tennis - Wins 1st Red Banner
Up 3-1 on No. 2 Lindsey Wilson in the NAIA National Championships, No. 17
Alexandra Melnikova sealed the national championship on court two, taking down No. 51 Martina Cortal 6-3, 6-1. After falling behind, 1-0, Keiser rallied in singles with wins on the top four flights to claim the program's first national title since 2003.
The No. 2 moment will face the winner of No. 7 versus No. 10 next week.
No. 3 seed - Men's Swimming - Noel wins 4th straight
National Champion and NAIA All-American Noel De Geus became the first swimmer since 1973 tow in four straight national championships in a single event, claiming this year's title in the 100m Breast with a time of 52.18. His performance was named the NAIA Swim of the Meet. The senior swimmer finished this year's National Championship with five national titles and earned NAIA All-America honors in six events.
The No. 3 moment will face the winner of No. 6 versus No. 11 next week.
No. 4 seed - Men's Soccer - Raul Cedillo Golden Goal
It took overtime, but Keiser claimed tis fourth Sun Conference Tournament crown since 2019 with a golden goal by
Raul Cedillo. Just six minutes into the extra period,
Sergio Padín-Rey sent a long ball down the right side to
Mikael Baisotti, who crossed it into the middle for Cedillo as the junior forward finished with composure, slipping the ball past the keeper for the golden goal and earning Tournament MVP honors.
The No. 4 moment will face the winner of No. 5 versus No. 12 next week.
