WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. The Keiser University softball team dropped a 6-3 decision to No. 17 University of the Cumberlands on Wednesday afternoon in Williamsburg, Kentucky, falling to 46-9 on the season in a game that got away from them in the third inning. Faith Campos made history during the game, recording her 68th hit of the season to surpass Carly Gragtmans' 2007 mark of 67 and claim the program's single-season hits record. Jordan Brantley provided the offensive spark for Keiser with a two-run home run down the left field line in the second inning, but a four-run third inning proved to be too much to overcome as Cumberlands pulled away for the victory.

Keiser took an early lead in the first inning when Kaci Kidd drew a leadoff walk and Faith Campos moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Genesis Iglesias then doubled to left center to score Kidd and give the Seahawks a 1-0 advantage. The lead grew in the second when Ava Stahl singled to shortstop and Jordan Brantley followed with a first-pitch two-run home run down the left field line to push the lead to 3-0. The Seahawks then had runners on base throughout the second inning with five hits in the frame but could not add on, stranding three after a Lanie Macicek fielder's choice and a Macy Schaaf groundout ended the threat. Cumberlands answered in the third inning with a damaging rally that began with back-to-back singles by Aniyah White and Alyssa Garcia. A Kaci Kidd throwing error advanced White all the way to third on Garcia's single, and a Maleah Clinton fielder's choice cut down White at home before Clinton stole second. A Grace Ross fielder's choice and a Jae Jae Phillips error off the bat of Sarah Phipps loaded the bases with two outs. Emily Delgado then singled down the right field line to score one, Makenzie Henderson drew a bases-loaded walk to score another, Kristen Smith singled up the middle to plate a third, and Jenna Fabela singled up the middle to score a fourth, turning a 3-0 Keiser lead into a 4-3 deficit before Presley Wright got Aniyah White to line out to end the inning. Keiser threatened in the fourth with Faith Campos singling and stealing second and Genesis Iglesias drawing a walk to put two on, but Macy Schaaf flied out to end the inning. Cumberlands extended the lead with a run in the sixth on an Alyssa Garcia RBI double to left center and added another in the seventh on a Makenzie Henderson sacrifice fly to make it 6-3 as Keiser was unable to respond in the final two innings.

Game Notes

  • Keiser falls to 46-9 on the season with Wednesday's loss to No. 17 University of the Cumberlands. The Seahawks will face Cumberlands tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. in the Opening Rounds Championship game, with the winner advancing to the NAIA Softball World Series.
  • Faith Campos made program history during the game, recording her 68th hit of the season to surpass Carly Gragtmans' record of 67 set in 2007 and claim the single-season hits record outright. She finished the game 1-for-2 with a walk, a sacrifice bunt, and a stolen base. She now sits at 68 hits and 50 stolen bases on the season.
  • Jordan Brantley delivered Keiser's biggest hit of the day, a first-pitch two-run home run down the left field line in the second inning that scored Ava Stahl and pushed the Seahawks' lead to 3-0. She finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored and is now batting .346 on the season with seven home runs and 24 RBI.
  • Genesis Iglesias had another outstanding individual game, going 3-for-3 with a walk, a double to left center in the first inning that scored Kaci Kidd, and a single up the middle in the seventh to put runners on base in Keiser's final threat. She reached base all four times she came to the plate. She is now batting .362 on the season with a .477 on-base percentage and 47 RBI.
  • Maggie Miller started and worked 2.2 innings, allowing four runs, none earned, on five hits with a walk in the third inning before giving way to Presley Wright. She falls to 9-3 on the season.
  • Presley Wright came on in relief in the third and worked 4.1 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits with a walk and three sacrifice bunts allowed on 35 pitches and 28 strikes. Wright holds a 6-2 record and a 2.28 ERA on the season across 76.2 innings.
  • Kaci Kidd drew a leadoff walk in the first inning to set up the Seahawks' first run and singled to left field in the second inning during the five-hit frame. A throwing error by Kidd in the third inning advanced a Cumberlands runner from first to third with no outs and contributed to the chaos in the decisive frame. She is now batting .335 on the season.
  • Ava Stahl went 1-for-4 with a single to shortstop to lead off the second inning and scored on the Jordan Brantley home run to give Keiser a 3-0 lead. She is now batting .274 on the season.
  • Keiser left nine runners on base across the game, stranding three in the second inning alone after loading the bases with five hits but failing to score despite the traffic. The Seahawks went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position on the day.
  • Keiser committed three errors in the game, a Kaci Kidd throwing error in the third inning, a Sarah Phipps throwing error in the third, and a Genesis Iglesias throwing error in the seventh. The Phipps error with two outs in the third was ruled the decisive miscue by the official scorer, as it loaded the bases and allowed all four Cumberlands runs in the inning to be scored as unearned.
  • Presley Wright induced a line drive double play in the sixth inning when Maleah Clinton lined to Genesis Iglesias at shortstop, who threw to Kaci Kidd at second to double off Alyssa Garcia and end the inning after an Alyssa Garcia RBI double had already scored one run. The double play prevented further scoring and kept the game within reach.
  • Keiser loaded the bases in the seventh inning on a Faith Campos walk, a Genesis Iglesias single, and pinch runner Tessa DiPietra reaching second, but Macy Schaaf hit an infield fly, Sarah Phipps flied out to left, and Ava Stahl grounded out to end the game and the Seahawks' final rally.
