SEU Softball Field | Lakeland, Fla.

LAKELAND, Fla. The Keiser University softball team dropped the series opener to No. 4 Southeastern University 8-0 on Thursday evening at SEU Softball Field in Lakeland, falling to 38-5 on the season in a tough road test against one of the NAIA's elite programs. The Seahawks were held scoreless through all six innings and never managed to string together a sustained offensive threat, finishing the night with just four hits as Keiser was unable to find answers against Southeastern's ace in the circle.

Keiser's best opportunity came in the fourth when Kaci Kidd led off with a single to first and Faith Campos sacrificed her to second, but Genesis Iglesias and Macy Schaaf both flew out to strand the runner and end the threat. The Seahawks briefly showed life in the fifth as Sarah Phipps led off with a single and Olivia Shoemaker followed with a base hit of her own, but the inning unraveled when Phipps was caught stealing second and a Jordan Brantley fielder's choice erased Shoemaker two batters later. Tessa DiPietra gave the Seahawks a leadoff single to start the sixth, but Keiser was unable to convert as the next three batters were retired in order to close out the shutout.

Keiser fell behind 2-0 in the third on a two-run home run and never threatened to get back into the game, as Southeastern added four more in the fifth and two in the sixth to pull away. Mackenzie Masternak worked five innings in the circle before the Seahawks ran out of outs. Despite the tough night, the Seahawks enter Saturday's doubleheader at 38-5 with an opportunity to regroup and take the series.

Game Notes

  • Keiser falls to 38-5 overall and 16-3 in conference play with Thursday's loss. It is the Seahawks' fifth loss of the season and first in this road series against No. 4 Southeastern, which improves to 37-4 and 18-1 in conference action.
  • Mackenzie Masternak took the loss, falling to 21-4 on the season after allowing eight runs, seven earned, on 12 hits over five innings on 79 pitches. Masternak's season ERA remains a strong 1.76 despite one of her more difficult outings of the year.
  • Keiser's offense was held to four hits on the night, with Tessa DiPietra, Kaci Kidd, Sarah Phipps, and Olivia Shoemaker each recording one hit. The Seahawks never had more than one hit in any single inning and were unable to manufacture a run despite putting runners on base in multiple frames.
  • Keiser's best scoring threat came in the fourth inning when Kidd singled to lead off and was sacrificed to second by Campos, then advanced to third on a Genesis Iglesias flyout, but Macy Schaaf flew out to center to strand her and end the inning with the runner 90 feet away.
  • Sarah Phipps recorded one of Keiser's four hits with a leadoff single in the fifth, but was caught stealing second by Southeastern's catcher on the very next play, killing the rally before it could develop.
  • Olivia Shoemaker singled to right center in the fifth inning in what was Keiser's most sustained two-hit stretch of the evening, but a fielder's choice on a Jordan Brantley grounder erased her and snuffed out the threat.
  • Keiser committed one error on the night, a throwing error by second baseman Kaci Kidd in the sixth inning that allowed an unearned run to score. It was a rare defensive miscue for a team that has been excellent in the field throughout the season.
  • Faith Campos executed a sacrifice bunt in the fourth inning to advance Kidd into scoring position, one of Keiser's more purposeful offensive sequences of the night, though the Seahawks were ultimately unable to capitalize.
  • Keiser was held without a walk on the night, with the offense unable to extend any at-bats against Southeastern's starter, who threw 85 pitches and 58 strikes and was in command throughout all six innings of work.
