MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. The Keiser University softball team held off St. Thomas University 3-2 on Friday evening at the St. Thomas campus in Miami Gardens to improve to 36-4 on the season in a tight conference battle. Trinity Rohrer led the way offensively with a 2-for-3 effort, while Sarah Phipps delivered a key RBI double in the fourth inning to give the Seahawks the lead for good. Mackenzie Masternak turned in a strong six innings in the circle before Maggie Miller slammed the door in the seventh with three strikeouts to secure the conference victory.
Keiser wasted no time getting on the board, striking in the first inning when Faith Campos reached on a bunt single, stole second, and came around to score on a wild pitch from St. Thomas starter Christina Ortiz to make it 1-0. The Seahawks pushed the advantage to 2-0 in the fourth when Genesis Iglesias singled, stole second, and came home on a Sarah Phipps RBI double to the third base line. St. Thomas answered in the bottom of the sixth when Mya Achenbach led off with a solo home run to center field to knot the game at 2-2, setting the stage for a dramatic seventh.
Keiser answered back immediately in the top of the seventh. With runners on first and second following singles from Jordan Brantley and Trinity Rohrer, a wild pitch moved Brantley to third before pinch hitter Olivia Shoemaker lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to plate the go-ahead run. Miller came on in relief and retired the final three batters, all via strikeout, to close out the 3-2 victory and send Keiser home with a crucial conference win.
