No. 5 Keiser women's lacrosse defeated Kean University 20-12 on Sunday afternoon at Gyrene Field, improving its record to 3-1.
The game began with the Seahawks securing the initial draw control, quickly leading to a flurry of activity. After an early turnover, Keiser's
Emily Ferris capitalized on an assist from
Kate Griffin. The Seahawks then pulled ahead with goals from
MacKenzie Gibaud and
Baylee Walker. Kean responded with a pair of goals, but the Seahawks maintained their offensive momentum. Gibaud added another goal, and Schweigert scored on a free-position shot to put KU back up by two. Beth Leeder then closed the quarter with two goals, both assisted by
Tess Geiger, solidifying a 7-4 lead for the Seahawks at the end of the first quarter.
The Seahawks responded to an early goal by the Cougars with a successful strike from Griffin, assisted by Gibaud, at 13:13. Another man-up goal by Griffin extended the Seahawks' lead to 10-6. Keiser maintained its advantage despite the Cougars' efforts, closing the half with a score of 11-6.
The Seahawks asserted their dominance in the third quarter with a series of goals.
Isabelle Vrensen opened the scoring at 13:18, followed by a man-down goal from Isturiz at 11:44 that was assisted by Vrensen. Despite a man-up goal from Kean's Skyler Ray at 9:50, Keiser's
Brooke Starritt responded with a free position goal at 8:18 to bring the score to 14-7. Starritt added another goal at 6:43, and Schweigert contributed two goals late in the quarter, one at 2:07 and another at 1:20, the latter assisted by
Lucy Single.
Emily McCall sealed the quarter's scoring at 00:16 with a man-up goal to put Keiser up 10 heading to the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, the Cougars initially gained momentum with Emilie Schultz scoring twice, narrowing the gap. However, the Seahawks had a response, with Vrensen scoring at 8:43 and another goal from Vrensen at 6:36, maintaining their lead. Keiser's defense would take over from there as the Seahawks secured a 20-12 victory on the day.
Keiser's next game will take place at home against No. 10 Lawrence Tech on Wednesday, March 11, at noon in West Palm Beach, Fla.
