No. 11 Keiser men's basketball put on a dominant performance from start to finish, routing St. Thomas by a final score of 99-73 in the Sun Conference Semifinals on Friday evening at the Student Life Center in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Nadir Myers scored the game's first seven points in under two minutes, and St. Thomas was already calling timeout before they'd gotten off a clean look. Keiser continued with Jaylen Lee, who checked in and immediately made an impact. A layup-and-one tied it, and a steal led to free throws that put Keiser back in front. Adrian Cruz would have a response as over a blistering stretch around the 10-minute mark, he hit back-to-back threes, then set up Tovar for a fast-break three off a stolen pass, and suddenly St. Thomas led 26-22. Lee and Kaleb Myers traded buckets with Cruz and Tovar throughout the remainder of the half, and by the time the buzzer sounded, both teams had exchanged leads three times and were tied once. Keiser held a 42-36 edge at the break.
The second half opened with Myers burying a jumper on the first possession, Cameron Baldwin stripping the ball at the other end, and Loghan Downie catching it in stride for a fast-break dunk. Downie came right back down and drilled a three off a Baldwin assist, pushing it to 51-38. The Bobcats kept clawing back, cutting the deficit to single digits a couple of times, but every time St. Thomas made a move, Lee had an answer. He scored 18 of his game-high 31 points in the second half alone, and every time the Bobcats inched back within range, he slammed the door. Jackson Kennedy came alive off the bench for Keiser, blocking shots at the rim and converting a layup-and-one to push it to 66-55. With about four minutes to go it was a 17-point game and effectively over. Keiser's reserves poured it on: Downie hit a three, Mathew Shea stole a lazy pass, took two dribbles, and threw down a dunk that made it 98-73 with a minute left to ice the contest.
Keiser will take on No. 9 Ave Maria tomorrow night in the Sun Conference Championship at the Student Life Center. Tipoff from West Palm Beach, Fla. is set for 6:00 p.m.
