Vrensen Scores Overtime Winner as No. 3 Women's Lacrosse Knocks Off No. 1 SCAD, 14-13

It took an extra 43 seconds of gameplay for Isabelle Vrensen and No. 3 Keiser women's lacrosse to secure their 12th win of the season, defeating No. 1 SCAD in Hardeeville, S.C., 14-13. Vrensen finished the day with seven goals and an assist in her best outing of her career thus far. Hayley Frew and Jia Schweigert each tallied two goals in the contest to help the effort. The Keiser keepers put in work on the other end of the field, tallying a season-best 11 saves on Sunday. Raelyn Boutwell and Cassidy Green were both utilized throughout the contest with Green getting credit for six of the 11 saves.

Keiser will be back at home on Thursday, April 3, when they face the Warner Royals at home for senior day. The opening draw control from the Multi-Purpose Field in West Palm Beach, Fla. is set for 6:00 p.m.

First Quarter
Keiser 3, SCAD 2
  • SCAD controlled the opening draw and found the back of the net just over a minute into the game
  • The next possession would be controlled by Keiser when Isabelle Vrensen took the ball at the top of the arc and beat multiple defenders before tying the game at 1-1
  • The Bees would have a similar response on the next possession with Emma Roch controlling the draw and scoring the goal to make it 2-1 SCAD
  • A big save by Cassidy Green with 9:55 on the clock kept the game tied as both teams settled in to their offenses
  • With 7:15 showing, Vrensen used a pick from Hayley Frew before cutting through the heart of the SCAD defense and firing in her second of the day to tie the game again
  • A misplaced pass from the SCAD goalie with under a minute to play led to a chance for MacKenzie Gibaud who put Jia Schweigert 1-on-1 with the keeper. Schweigert would fake one way before going the other to give Keiser the lead going into the second

Second Quarter
Keiser 7, SCAD 7
  • Following a turnover by the Bees, Jasmine Sidawi picked up a groundball and found Vrensen at midfield who did the rest, completing her hat trick with 13:58 on the clock
  • Two minutes later, Hayley Frew drew a triple team of defenders before laying it off for Peyton Tomlinson who scored with a quick shot to make it 5-2
  • The Bees would score their third with 11:02 on the clock,  but a minute later it was Vrensen scoring again to make it 6-3
  • SCAD proceeded to change goalies after the goal, but Keiser did not change the game plan, going back to Vrensen who delivered her fifth goal of the day, this time from the left side
  • The Bees were able to get a goal back with Karly Holland picking up her second of the day with 7:42 left in the half
  • Two more goals by SCAD would make it a 7-6 game with 3:59 on the clock
  • With just three seconds left in the half, the Bees scored from a free position shot to tie the game at 7-7


Third Quarter
Keiser 10, SCAD 10
  • Jordyn Payne found Frew cutting across the face of the net who slotted the shot into the net for the 8-7 Keiser lead less than a minute into the third
  • Holland would tally a pair of goals to give the Bees the lead with 8:00 minutes left in the quarter
  • With under five minutes to play in the third, Vrensen found Schweigert wide open who tied the game at 9-9
  • Less than a minute later, Gibaud drew the double team before finding Payne who slotted home the goal that gave Keiser the lead, 10-9
  • Holland would slot her fifth goal of the afternoon with 2:55 showing to tie the game once again
  • SCAD would get the final chance of the quarter, but Green would be there to make her sixth save of the day and send the game into the fourth

Fourth Quarter
Keiser 13, SCAD 13
  • After a save by Raelyn Boutwell on one end, Keiser was out in transition with the ball getting to Gibaud in a 1-on-1 who beat the keeper to put Keiser in front 11-10
  • Frew made it 12-10 with 8:30 to go in the fourth on a free position attempt
  • SCAD would answer with a goal on their end to cut the lead down to one
  • With 6:24 on the clock, Tomlinson found Vrensen cutting across the field who scored her sixth of the game to make it 13-11
  • Two minutes later, Ellen Benintendi finally got on the board for the Bees to bring the deficit down to one
  • SCAD would go on to tie the game with just over two minutes left in the quarter
  • Both teams would get chances, but neither would be able to convert as the game would need overtime to decide a winner

Overtime
Keiser 14, SCAD 13
  • Just 43 seconds into the overtime period, Vrensen was fouled inside the 8-meter arc and set herself up for the free position attempt. Vrensen would charge in and score her seventh goal of the game to give Keiser the lead and the win.

Game Notes
  • Keiser improves to 12-0 on the season with the win
  • The Seahawks now sit alone atop the Sun Conference standings with a 4-0 record
  • KU moves to 6-0 on the season against ranked opponents and 38-27 all time
  • With the win, the Seahawks picked up just their second win in program history over a No. 1-ranked opponent
  • Vrensen led all players in scoring on Sunday with seven goals as she pushed her season total to 33
  • She has now tallied a hat trick in seven of her 12 games this season
  • Six different players found the back of the net for Keiser on Sunday 
  • Brooklyn Kollar was the leader in groundballs with three in the game
  • Vrensen, Tomlinson, Milena Isturiz, and Sydney Parker all tallied two caused turnovers for KU
  • Frew and Tomlinson each had four draw controls in the game for the Seahawks
  • In goal, Boutwell and Green combined for 11 saves
  • Green had one more save than Boutwell in the game but it was Boutwell who got credit for the win
