No. 7 Women's Lacrosse Wins Thriller over No. 2 Lawrence Tech in Baltimore, 20-17

No. 7 Keiser women's lacrosse topped No. 2 Lawrence Tech in a high-scoring affair on Sunday afternoon at Tierney Field in Baltimore, Maryland. The Seahawks lived up to the stage that they played on with a season-high 20 goals at the USA Lacrosse Headquarters. Jia Schweigert led the way for KU with five goals on the day. MacKenzie Gibaud followed with four goals of her own including three in the fourth quarter alone. Jordyn Payne tallied her third consecutive hat trick of the season with three goals in the game. 

The Seahawks will return home for their next matchup against New College of Florida on Saturday, March 1. The opening draw control from the Multi-Purpose Field in West Palm Beach, Fla. is set for 3:00 p.m.


First Quarter
Keiser 5, LTU 4
  • The Seahawks were quickly on the attack with Isabelle Vrensen scoring just 20 seconds into the contest
  • Peyton Tomlinson doubled the lead before Jordyn Payne made it 3-0 in the first three minutes
  • After the Blue Devils got on the board, Emily McCall joined the fun with her first goal of the game at the 5:09 mark
  • LTU would once again come down and score, but Jia Schweigert netted her first of the contest to make it 5-2 with 2:31 showing
  • The Blue Devils would end the quarter with a pair of goals to cut the lead down to just one

Second Quarter
Keiser 12, LTU 10
  • Lawrence Tech would tie the game early in the second before MacKenzie Gibaud put the Seahawks back in front at the 13:34 mark
  • The cycle would repeat itself a minute later with the Blue Devils tying it before Schweigert put KU back in the lead
  • Payne followed it up with her second of the day before Milena Isturiz and Hayley Frew had the Seahawks up four, 10-6, with 7:16 to play in the half
  • Lawrence Tech would counter with three straight as Sydney Robinson finished her hat trick with 4:51 left
  • Schweigert would finish her hat trick 30 seconds later before another goal from Robinson brought the Blue Devils within one
  • Just seconds before the halftime whistle, Tomlinson found the back of the net to give Keiser the two-goal lead going into the break


Third Quarter
Keiser 15, LTU 13
  • Schweigert scored her fourth of the game to open the third quarter to make it 13-10
  • Following a goal by Blue Devils, Schweigert scored again with 10:41 on the clock
  • Payne's hat trick goal would be sandwiched by LTU goals as the Seahawks held a two-goal lead going into the fourth

Fourth Quarter
Keiser 20, LTU 17
  • Hannah Huebner opened the fourth with her fifth goal of the game to cut the Keiser lead to one
  • Gibaud countered with her second of the day, followed by McCall, to put the Seahawks up three with 8:47 showing
  • Less than a minute later, Gibaud scored again to complete her hat trick with 7:51 to play
  • Huebner grabbed another for the Blue Devils before Gibaud was called on again to put Keiser ahead 19-15
  • Huebner and Robinson would go on to put Lawrence Tech within two with just over three minutes to play 
  • With seven seconds left, Vrensen sealed it with her second goal of the afternoon


Game Notes
  • Keiser improves to 4-0 with the win
  • The Seahawks are now 2-0 this season against ranked opponents
  • KU is now 34-27 all-time against ranked opponents and 9-7 in neutral site games against ranked teams
  • Keiser moves to 2-1 against Lawrence Tech in neutral site games
  • Schweigert impressed in her first multi-goal game of the season with five on the day
  • Gibaud finished just behind her with four goals followed by Payne with three
  • Frew notched three assists in the game followed by Gibaud who had two
  • Vrensens two goals came 59 minutes and 33 seconds apart in game time as she scored the first and last goals of the game
  • Cassidy Green and Raelyn Boutwell split time once again for the Seahawks in net
