No. 1 Football Wins Third Straight Sun Conference Title

The No. 1-ranked Keiser football team (9-0, 6-0 SUN) defeated the Ave Maria Gyrenes (3-7, 2-5 SUN), 52-21, to claim its third straight Sun Conference Championship on Saturday night.
 
Scoring on each of their first three possessions, the Seahawks took a 21-7 lead in the first and never looked back. Keiser amassed 526 yards of total offense in the game, marking the second straight game of 500 yards-or-more and the third in the team's last four games.
 
Andrew Burnette posted his fourth straight 100-yard rushing game and sixth of the season, recording 121 yards on 17 carries with one touchdown. The native of Jensen Beach, Florida, reached the 1000-yard rushing mark on the season, finishing the night with 1,007.
 
Quarterback Shea Spencer set a career mark with four passing touchdowns. The Seahawks signal-caller completed 15-of-22 passes for 234 yards. Spencer connected on two of those TD passes with Refeno Vangates, who had five catches for 78 yards.

The win extended the nation's longest winning streak to 20 games as Keiser moved to 19-0 all-time in Sun Conference action and 39-3 in conference play (SUN & MSC).

 


First Quarter
Keiser 21, Ave Maria 7
  • The Seahawk's defense forced a three-and-out on the Gyrene's first drive, giving the ball to Keiser at the AMU 48-yard line with 13:58 on the clock
  • On the third play of KU's opening drive, Shea Spencer completed a 36-yard pass to Claudell Sherman for the team's first touchdown of the game
  • Following the made extra point, Keiser led, 7-0, with 13:14 left in the first
  • After another defensive stop by the Seahawks, it took just one play for Keiser to extend its lead
  • Spencer found Refeno Vangates for 58 yards and the score as the Seahawks led, 14-0, with 9:16 remaining in the first quarter
  • Ave Maria got on the board on the ensuing drive, going 75 yards on six plays - capped off with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Lege to Devin Harris (14-7 - 5:31)
  • Keiser struck quickly again as Spencer recorded his third TD pass of the quarter completing a 16-yard touchdown pass to Maurico Porcha (3:41)

Second Quarter
Keiser 24, Ave Maria 7
  • The Seahawks pushed their lead to 24-7 with a 39-yard field goal by Nico Cavanillas with 11:13 remaining in the half
  • The 39-yarder was a career-best for the second-year kicker
  • After the Seahawks forced another three-and-out, Keiser drove 59 yards down to the AMU two-yard line
  • A fade route attempt in the corner of the endzone was picked off by Ave's Johnny Nedwick, halting the Seahawk threat

Third Quarter
Keiser 38, Ave Maria 14
  • The Seahawks opened the second half with another score, going 84 yards on 12 plays
  • Jaden Meizinger scored the 51st touchdown of his career with a 13-yard run, giving Keiser the 31-7 lead (8:40)
  • After Justin Carcel laid out to pick off a Lege pass at the AMU 48-yard line, Keiser found the endzone again
  • Following a 40-yard run by Porcha and a two-yard rush by Andrew Burnette, KU made it a 38-7 game as Spencer connected with Vangates for a nine-yard touchdown pass
  •  AMU cut into the Keiser lead following a 27-yard pass from Lege to Rowman Newkirk (38-14 - 00:17) 

Fourth Quarter
Keiser 52, Ave Maria 21
  • Burnette scored in his eighth straight game with a six-yard rushing touchdown with 12:49 left in the game
  • On their next possession, the Gyrenes went for it on fourth-and-four from the KU 43 but were stopped on an incomplete pass which was broken up by Evan Jackson (10:49)
  • The Seahawks broke the 50-point barrier for the third time this season when Damari Charlton rushed for two yards and the score with 3:21 on the clock (52-14)
  • The Gyrenes scored one final time to make it 52-14 game as Lege tossed a 29-yard TD pass to Thomas Schiavon (1:24)
