Keiser Splits Opening Day of Bettye Wallace Invitational

The Keiser volleyball team fell to Southwest Baptist and took down West Alabama today in Arkadelphia, Ark. Both teams were NCAA Division II programs.

How it Happened

The Seahawks led initially against the Bearcats, but SBU took the lead back with a 6-0 run that began when KU led the set 9-8. A 4-0 run later would propel SBU to the set victory. In the second set, Keiser led by as much as 13-8, but a 5-1 Bearcat run cut the Keiser lead down to one. Though KU would take a late lead, the Bearcats closed the set on a 5-1 run. Keiser went back to work in final set, and held a 10-9 lead over SBU. However, the Bearcats went on a 6-1 run to force a Keiser timeout. Coming out of the break, both squads battled and never led by more than two points. Unfortunately for the Seahawks, SBU managed to pull ahead late and score the final three points of the match.

How it Happened

Keiser began their second game of the day with a rapid fire start to the first set, jumping out to a 22-6 lead on a smothering 12-0 run. The Seahawks would close out the set and take the initial lead. In the second set, the Tigers fought back, and used 5-0 and 6-0 scoring runs to tie the match. In the next set, UWA and KU locked up and traded blows until a block for West Alabama gave the Tigers the set. Down 2-1, the Seahawks regained control with a set victory that saw KU fend off 6-0 and 3-0 runs from UWA. In the final set, Keiser closed out the match in dominating style with a 4-0 run to begin the set and force a UWA timeout, a 5-0 run midway to stretch the lead, and a 3-0 run to end the match. 

Key Stats
  • The Tigers committed 12 service errors.
  • Brooklynn Slater racked up 18 kills with a career-high six service aces. 
  • Erika Magin chipped in 18 digs.
  • Hannah Heide dished out 34 assists along with 10 digs.  
  • Sydney Wattles and Aby Tibesar logged nine kills each while hitting .444 and .600 respectively. 
  • Tibesar's kill total matched her career high. 
  • Londyn Tanguay added five kills and two assists.

Up Next
The Seahawks will face Lane College and SE Oklahoma State tomorrow on the final day of the tournament.
