Dominating Third Quarter Leads to 59-50 Win for Seahawks

The Keiser women's basketball team used a dominant third quarter to down the Warner Royals, 59-50, on Saturday afternoon. Janiece Thomas posted 10 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals in the Seahawk's third conference road win of the season. She led the team in assists and steals while tied for the team lead in rebounds with Shykim GillionKennedy Schlabach scored a game-high 15 points (all in the second half).

The win marked Keiser's 25th all-time over Warner.

Holding a two-point lead heading into halftime, Keiser out-scored the Royals 21-9 in the third quarter, leading to the team's second straight win. The Seahawks opened the third with an 11-3 run to push the team's advantage to double-digits and never looked back. 
 
 
How it Happened


First Quarter

Keiser 10, Warner 9
  • The Royals got on the board first with a bucket by Jasmine Edwards with a layup at the 8:00 mark, 2-0.
  • Janiece Thomas tied the game with a pair of made free throws with 5:07 remaining in the first quarter.
  • The Seahawks took their first lead of the game after Taylor Jones went 2-of-2 from the charity stripe, 4-2 (4:02).
  • Jones hit the Seahawk's first bucket of the game, snapping an 0-of-13 shooting start to give Keiser a 6-4 lead with 2:49 left in the first.
  • After WU hit two free throws to tie the game, Elise Ellison-Coons gave KU an 8-6 lead off and assist by Kennedy Schlabach (2:08).
  • Thomas extended the Keiser lead to 10-6 with a made jumper with 56 second remaining.
  • Warner responded with a 3-pointer by Sierra Moore, cutting Keiser's lead to 10-9.
  • Warner held a 17-9 edge in rebound in the first quarter.

Second Quarter

  • Elliana Schaefer hit Keiser's first 3-pointer of the game with a triple at the 9:49 mark, giving the Seahawks a 13-9 lead.
  • KU added three more points with a 3-pointer by Andressa Nascimento with 9:08 left in the first half, 16-9.
  • WU's Moore made it a 16-11 game with a basket at the 7:18 mark.
  • The Royals tied the game on a 3-pointer by Emani Theodule with 5:18 on the game clock.
  • WU extended its run to 9-0 with a jumper by Theodule as the Royals took an 18-16 lead (4:51).
  • Jones tied the game with her second basket of the game, 18-18 (4:10).
  • Keiser regained the lead on a layup by Ellison-Coons with 3:07 left in the second quarter.

Third Quarter

  • Julia Fitzwater hit her first 3-pointer of the game to give Keiser a 27-23 lead (8:22).
  • WU's Chanelle McDonald cut into KU's lead, 27-25, with a made jumper at the 8:01 mark.
  • Fitzwater responded with her second straight 3-pointer, 30-25.
  • Ellison-Coons pushed Keiser's lead to 32-25 with her sixth point of game on a layup with 7:03 left in the third. Schlabach notched the assist on the bucket.
  • Fouled on the score, Ellison-Coons converted the free-throw attempt, giving Keiser a 33-25 lead.
  • Schlabach hit two free-throws following a technical foul on WU's McDonald (6:38), making it a 10-point game.
  • Warner ended KU's 8-0 run with a made jumper by McDonald (5:21).
  • Schlabach made it a 38-27 game with her first 3-pointer of the contest (4:37).
  • Ellison-Coons was perfect from the line with 3:54 left in the third to give Keiser a 40-29 lead.

  • After Jones went 1-of-2 from the free-throw line, Warner's McDonald converted a layup to cut the Seahawk lead to 46-33 with 7:58 left in the game.
  • Schlabach gave Keiser its largest lead of the game (16 points) with her second 3-pointer of the game, 49-33, with 7:37 on the clock.
  • Megan Peterson hit a 3-pointer for Warner with 6:22 left to make it a 49-36 game.
  • Jones gave Keiser a 51-36 lead as she reached double-figures in scoring (10 pts.) with 6:03 on the game clock.
  • With 5:41 left in the game, WU's McDonald hit a jumper to cut the Seahawk lead to 51-38.
  • Ortiz scored the Royal's second straight basket to make score 51-40 with 4:32 left in the game.
  • The Royals cut Keiser's lead to 10 following a made jumper by Theodule with 3:52 on the clock.
  • Thomas countered with a made layup to give Keiser a 54-42 lead (3:34).
  • Schlabach was sent to the line with 3:04 on the clock, converting both attempts (56-42).
  • The Royals scored four straight points to return the deficit to 10 points (56-46) with 1:53 left to play.
  • WU's McDonald hit a jumper with 1:03 on the clock to cut the lead to 56-48.
  • With 40 second left to play, Schlabach went ot the line and hit both attempts to make it a 58-48 contest.
