Gillion Scores 1,000th-Career Point in Overtime Loss to St. Thomas

The Keiser women's basketball lost an overtime contest to the St. Thomas Bobcats on Saturday afternoon, 81-79. Despite jumping out to a 21 point lead after a hot-shooting first half (55.2 percent), the Seahawks saw their lead slowly disappear as the STU out-scored Keiser, 45-29, in the final two quarters to send the game the overtime. It took a game-winning bucket with one second on the clock to hand the Seahawks their fourth conference loss at home this season. Kennedy Schlabach paced all Seahawks with 28 points followed by Shykim Gillion's 15, and Elise Ellison-Coons' 13. Gillion scored the 1,000th point of her career during the contest - a made free throw with 1:24 left in the fourth quarter.

In overtime, The Bobcats used a 4-0 run to tie the game, 79-79 with 43 second on the game clock. Keiser went to the line with 17 seconds remaining but neither shots fell as the game remained tied, 79-79. With one second left in the game, Moye hit the go-ahead bucket, 81-79. 
 
 
How it Happened


First Quarter

Keiser 25, St. Thomas 12
  • Kennedy Schlabach opened the game with a 3-pointer with 9:42 on the game clock.
  • The Seahawks extended their lead to 6-0 after Shykim Gillion went 1-of-2 from the line with 8:23 left in the first.
  • Schlabach hit her second triple of the quarter to give Keiser a 9-2 lead with 7:57 on the clock.
  • With 6:30 on the game clock, Gillion pushed the lead to 11-2 with a made layup. 
  • Schlabach hit her third 3-pointer of the quarter at the 5:22 mark as Keiser took an 11-point lead, 15-4.
  • Julia Fitzwater gave Keiser its largest lead of the quarter with a 3-pointer at the 5:01 mark, 18-4.
  • STU's Maya Moye cut the KU lead to 18-7 with a made 3-pointer (4:51).
  • Schlabach countered with another 3-pointer to regain the 14-point lead, 21-7.
  • The Seahawks closed out the quarter with a 13-point lead.

Second Quarter

Keiser 44, St. Thomas 28
  • Both teams exchanged baskets over the first two minutes of the quarter before Keiser used an 8-0 run to take a 35-17 lead (6:56).
  • A three-pointer by Fitzwater capped off the run as the Seahawks took an 18-point lead.
  • STU's Page McDonald converted a layup to bring the Bobcats within 16.
  • Schlabach sparked a 5-0 run with a 3-pointer with 5:27 left in the half. 
  • Gillion made it a 21-point game with a made jumper at the 3:18 mark, 42-21.
  • The Seahawks went into the half up by 16.
  • Schlabach finished the first half with 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor.

Third Quarter

Keiser 54, St. Thomas 45
  • Elise Ellison-Coons began the second half with a pair of made free-throws, giving KU a 46-28 lead (9:16).
  • After two consecutive makes by the Bobcats, Taylor Jones went 2-of-2 from the free-throw line to make it a 48-32 game (5:47).
  • The Bobcats used a 6-0 run to being the Keiser lead to 10, 48-38, with 2:59 left in the third.
  • Schlabach was a perfect 2-of-2 from the line at the 2:42 mark to push the Seahawk's lead to 50-38 (2:42).
  • The Bobcats closed out the quarter, pulling the deficit to single-digits following a pair of made shots from the charity stripe by Kasey Gagan.

Fourth Quarter

Keiser 73, St. Thomas 73
  • The Bobcats chipped away the Seahawk's lead down to seven following two made from the line by Brooke Bogatz (7:27).
  • Zaniah Banks gave Keiser a 61-52 lead with a made jumper off a Gillion rebound. Elliana Schaefer was credited with the assist on the play (6:47).
  • St. Thomas went on a 10-1 run to tie the game at 62-62 with 4:24 on the clock.
  • Ellison-Coons regained the lead for the Seahawks with a put-back layup (3:46).
  • The final 3:46 of regulation saw five lead changes and two ties.
  • During that stretch, Gillion notched the 1,000th point of her career with made free-throw with 1:24 on the game clock. The point pulled Keiser within one, 70-69.
  • Down two with less than five second remaining regulation, Keiser inbounded the ball with a chance for one last shot.
  • After to back-to-back misses, Schaefer hit the game-tying shot at time expired to send the contest to overtime.

Overtime

  • Gillion scored the first points of the extra frame as Keiser took a 75-73 lead (4:33).
  • Bogatz tied the game with a jumper at the 4;21 mark (75-75).
  • The Seahawks regained the lead on a made jumper by Schaefer, 77-75 (3:45).
  • With 1:43 left in overtime, Ellison-Coons extended Keiser's lead to four, 79-75, with a pair of made free throws.
  • The Bobcats used a 4-0 run to tie the game, 79-79 with 43 second on the game clock.
  • Keiser went to the line with 17 seconds remaining but neither shots fell as the game remained tied, 79-79.
  • With one second left in the game, Moye hit the go-ahead bucket, 81-79.

  • The loss improves Keiser to 13-10 overall this season and 4-8 in Sun Conference action.
  • Saturday marked the first overtime contest of the season for the Seahawks.
