Women's Basketball Falls to Ave Maria in SUN Quarterfinals

The Keiser women's basketball's season ended on Tuesday with a 48-44 loss to the Ave Maria Gyrenes in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Sun Conference Women's Basketball Tournament.

With the loss, KU ended the year with an 18-12 overall record, finishing fourth in the Sun Conference Standings.

Trailing by one, 45-44, Shykim Gillion grabbed an offensive rebound off of her own miss. A strong defensive play by Lavariah Armstead forced a Seahawk turnover resulting in a foul and two shots for the Gyrenes at the free-throw line. Armstead made both shots, pushing AMU lead to three, 47-44 with 1:19 left in the game.

First Quarter
Keiser 17, Ave Maria 4
  • Shykim Gillion scored the first bucket of the game to give the Seahawks a 2-0 lead with 9:00 remaining in the quarter.
  • The Seahawks used a 15-4 run to close out the first. 

Second Quarter
Keiser 20, Ave Maria 20
  • AMU used a 9-0 run to pull within four, 17-13, with 5:38 on the game clock. 
  • Angela Denis made it a four-point game, 20-16, with a bucket in he paint (2:44).
  • The Gyrenes went on a 4-0 run to tied the game, heading in to halftime, 20-20.

Third Quarter
Keiser 28, Ave Maria 28
  • Neither team could find their rhythm as each team netted eight points in the quarter.

Fourth Quarter
Ave Maria 48, Keiser 44
  • The Gyrenes jumped out toa 34-28 lead with 6:34 left to play.
  • A 3-pointer Gillion (4:33) and layup by Denis (3:43) brought the Seahawks to within one, 39-38.
  • AMU pushed its lead to 45-38 following a Monica Behrend 3-pointer with 3:06 left in the game. 
  • A triple by Fertig cut the Ave Maria lead to 45-44 with 2:22 on the clock.
  • Trailing by one, 45-44, Shykim Gillion grabbed an offensive rebound off of her own miss (1:22).
  • A strong defensive play by Lavariah Armstead forced a Seahawk turnover resulting in a foul and two shots for the Gyrenes at the free-throw line with 1:19 left to play.
  • Armstead made both free throws, 47-44.
