Women's Basketball Downs Mobile (Ala.), 62-53, in the SUN/SSAC Crossover Challenge

The Keiser women's basketball team used a late run versus the Mobile (Ala.) Rams to seal a 62-53 victory on Saturday. The game - part of the SUN/SSAC Crossover Challenge - took place at the Turner Athletic Center on the campus of Warner University. Shykim Gillion led all Seahawks with 19 points, five steals, and eight rebounds.

Down three late in the fourth, Elliana Schaefer responded with a bucket from downtown (3:51 on the game clock) to spark a 9-0 run for the Seahawks. 
 
 
How it Happened


First Quarter

Keiser 14, Mobile (Ala.) 13
  • The Seahawks jumped out to a 4-0 advantage with 6:58 left in the first following two made free throws by Andressa Nascimento and a layup by Shykim Gillion.
  • A jumper by guard Elliana Schaefer gave the Seahawks a 10-6 lead with 4:03 on the game clock.
  • After the Rams cut the Keiser lead to one (10-9), the Seahawks scored five straight points including a Kennedy Schlabach triple to push the KU lead 14-9 (00:50).
  • The Rams scored four straight points to close out the quarter, 14-13.

Second Quarter

Keiser 32, Mobile (Ala.) 23
  • Schaefer hit her first 3-pointer of the game to give KU a four-point lead, 19-15, with 8:43 left in the half.
  • Keiser went on an 11-0 run late in the second to take its biggest lead of the game, 32-19.
  • The Rams scored the final four points of the half as the Sehawks held a nine-point advantage going into halftime.
  • Gillion led all Seahawks with eight points and three steals through 20 minutes of action.

Third Quarter

Keiser 43, Mobile (Ala.) 37
  • Both teams traded buckets over the first five minutes of the quarter.
  • Mobile (Ala.) cut the Keiser lead to six, 36-30, following a 3-pointer by Claire Worth with 4:51 remaining in the third.
  • The Seahawks used a 7-2 run to regain an 11-point lead, 43-32, with 2:48 on the game clock.
  •  The Rams went on a 5-0 run the end the quarter, cutting the Keiser lead to six, 43-37.

Fourth Quarter

Keiser 62, Mobile (Ala.) 53
  • A 3-pointer for Mary Denman Luker pulled the Rams within three, 47-44, with 7:25 left in the game.
  • Gillion gave Keiser a 49-44 edge following a made jumper with 6:54 on the game clock.
  • Mobile (Ala.) tied the game - the first tie since 0-0 - after Rachel Leclerc scored on a steal, 49-49.
  • The Rams took their first lead of the game with a 3-pointer by Claire Worth, 52-49.
  • Schaefer responded with her second bucket from 3-point range, tying the game at 52-all with 3:51 left to play.
  • The Seahawks went on a 7-0 run to take a 59-52 lead (1:32).
  • Keiser maintained its lead in the final minute and a-half to win its third straight to start the season.
 


Game Notes

  • The win moves Keiser to 3-0 on the season.
  • The Seahawks have now  started the season 3-0 for the second consecutive year and just the third time since 2008-09
  • The win was the first away from the Student Life Center this season.
  • The win improves KU to 1-0 all-time versus the Rams.
  • Mobile (Ala.) is the first a two first-time opponents the Seahawks will face this weekend.
  • With the win, the Seahawks are 53-61 all-time versus first-time opponents.
  • The win marks the first victory for the Seahawks over at team from the state of Alabama (1-2 all-time).
  • The contest is part of the SUN/SSAC Crossover Challenge. 
  • The Sun Conference finished 3-5 over the span of the first day of the challenge.
