No. 12 Football Eliminates Defending National Champion Morningside, 29-28; Advances to NAIA Semifinals

For the second straight week, the No. 12-ranked Keiser football team knocked off an NAIA Top-5 team, defeating the defending National Champion Morningside Mustangs, 29-28, on Saturday. The Seahawks rallied from a 21-3 deficit to hand the Mustangs their first loss in 25 games.

Keiser out-gained the nation's top rated offense, 421-332, holding Morningside to just 36 yards on the ground while forcing three Mustang turnovers.
 
 

First Quarter

Morningside 21, Keiser 3
  • The Mustangs opened the game with a touchdown by K.J. Williams with 13:26 on the game clock.
  • The score was a one-yard run that capped off a six-play, 47-yard drive that ate up only 1:27.
  • The Seahawks responded with 10-play, 36-yard drive, leading to a 39-yard field goal by Chance Gagnon with 9:26 left in the first.
  • Morningside found the endzone again with 25-yard touchdown pass from Joe Dolincheck to Zach Norton (8:16).
  • The TD gave the Mustangs a 14-3 edge with over just over eight minutes left in the first quarter.
  • After a Keiser three-and-out, Morningside scored its third touchdown of the quarter as the game looked to get "out-of-hand" after Dolincheck threw his second touchdown of the game - this time an eight-yard pass to Williams.
  • The Mustangs led 21-3 with 3:47 on the game clock.
  • Another three-and-out gave the ball back to the Mustangs with Morningside driving.
  • However, on first-and-10 from the KU 20-yard line, linebacker Jaelin Willis picked off Dolincheck as the Seahawk defense recorded its first of three turnovers on the day. 

Second Quarter

Morningside 21, Keiser 10
  • On the Seahawk's second drive of the quarter, Keiser put together an impressive 18-play, 74-yard drive that took up 7:40 off the game clock.
  • The drive was capped off by an 11-yard touchdown run by Jaden Meizinger, cutting the Mustang's lead to 11, with 1:39 remaining in the half.
  • Keiser forced Morningside's offense to go three-and-out and give the Seahawks the ball with 56 second on the clock.
  • Gagnon looked to make Keiser history and pull the Seahawks closer but just missed a 53-yard attempt with three second remaining.
  •  In the second quarter, Keiser held the Mustangs to just 24 total yards of offense.

Third Quarter

Morningside 28, Keiser 16
  • To open the second half, Keiser engineered a 13-play drive the led to a 48-yard field goal by Gagnon with 9:14 on the clock.
  • The made field goal tied Gagnon's own record for longest field goal in Seahawk history.
  • On KU's next possession, Gagnon notched his third field goal of the game with a 38-yarder to make it a five-point game, 21-16 (6:31).
  • The score was the result of a seven-play, 51-yard drive that lasted 2:28.
  • The Mustangs countered with a 25-yard touchdown pass from backup Austin Johnson to Lennix Brown with 1:22 remaining in the third.
  • The score increased Morningside's lead to 12 heading into the final stanza.

Fourth Quarter

Keiser 29, Morningside 28
  • Meizinger got the fourth quarter started with a 23-yard touchdown run with 14:54 left in the game.
  • The score came on the first play of the quarter and ended a five-play drive that began at the end of the third.
  • The touchdown was the 11th of the season for Meizinger, who scored 10-or-more TDs in a season for the first time in his career.
  • The Seahawks took their first lead of the game on a 76-yard touchdown strike from Bryce Veasley to Jaylen Arnold with 8:21 in the game clock.
  • Keiser went for two but failed the attempt making it a one-point game, 29-28.
  • On the ensuing drive, Morningside drove the ball down to the KU 26-yard line.
  • On first-and-10, Dolincheck threw his second pick of the game as safety Brian Edwards intercepted the pass at the four-yard line.
  • The turnover gave Keiser the ball with 6:05 left to play. 
  • The Seahawks were forced to punt, giving the ball back to the Mustangs on the Keiser 44-yard line with 3:51 on the clock.
  • On the fifth play of the Mustang's drive, Camron Allen notched his second sack of the game, stripping Dolincheck and forcing the fumble which was recovered by Jertavis Black.
  • The Seahawks had the ball with 2:09 remaining in the contest.
  • A 14-yard run by Meizinger on the Seahawk's final drive sealed the victory for Keiser.

  • The Seahawks moved to 9-3 on the year with the win on Saturday.
  • With the win, Keiser advanced to the NAIA FCS Semifinals for the second time in the last three years.
  • Saturday's victory was the second straight for Keiser over a Top-5 team (defeated No. 4 Bethel [TN] in the First Round, 27-17, on November 19).
  • The Seahawks are now 2-3 all-time versus Top-5 teams.
  • The win over Morningside is the first for Keiser over the No. 1-ranked team in the nation.
  • With the win, the Seahawks improve to 5-3 in the NAIA Football Championship Series and 2-1 in the Quarterfinals.
  • Saturday was the first meeting between Keiser and Morningside.
  • The Seahawks are now 1-0 all-time versus teams from the state of Iowa.
  • With the win, Keiser remains undefeated in NAIA action this season (9-0).
  • Jaden Meizinger, the Quarterfinals Outstanding Offensive Player of the Game, rushed for 97 yards on 28 carries with two touchdowns. 
  • Defensive tackle Camron Allen, the Quarterfinals Outstanding Defensive Player of the Game, recorded a five tackles, including 2.0 sacks and a key forced fumble to lead Keiser to the victory.
  • Keiser won the turnover battle for the eighth straight game, forcing three - one fumble and two INTs. The Seahawks have forced 30 turnovers this season.
  • Jaylen Arnold set the school record for longest touchdown reception with a 76-yard catch midway through the fourth - it broke his previous best of 75 yards set against St. Thomas (10/8).
  • Bryce Veasley came off the bench to throw for 226 yards on 17-of-29 passing and one touchdown on Saturday. The 226 yards were the most for the first-year Seahawk in his Keiser career.
