Two Seahawks Set Career-Highs in Women's Basketball 95-88 Loss to Indiana University East

Despite career-highs from Elise Ellison-Coons and Kaitlyn Fertig, the Keiser women's basketball team dropped their second straight contest at home, falling to Indiana University East 95-88 Sunday evening.

An 18-4 run to open the third quarter gave the Red Wolves their largest lead of the contest, 61-39.
 

 
How it Happened


First Quarter

Keiser 18, IU East 21
  • Keiser opened their largest lead of the quarter, 13-8, with back-to-back baskets prior to the media timeout at the 4:44 mark.
  • Out of the media stoppage, the Seahawks pushed their run to a 6-2 surge before the Red Wolves responded with six straight points to take their first lead, 16-15, at the 2:41 mark.
  • IU East extended their run to an 11-0, increasing their lead to 21-15 with 1:00 remaining in the quarter.
  • Shykim Gillion split a pair of free throws and a steal and layup by Chiara De Virgilio allowed the Seahawks to cut the deficit to 21-18 at the end of the first.

Second Quarter

Keiser 35, IU East 43
  • A Gillion layup to open the quarter cut the IU East lead to one, 21-20, at the 9:31 mark.
  • The Red Wolves answered with seven straight points to increase their lead to 28-20 before an and-one by Ellison-Coons stopped the bleeding momentarily for the Seahawks.
  • Back-to-back baskets by IU East extended their run to 11-3 as the two sides reached the media break with 4:51 left in the half.
  • Ellison-Coons reached double figures with a pair of makes at the line out of the stoppage, cutting the deficit to 32-25 with 4:15 left.
  • Keiser netted six of the next 10 points to draw within five, 36-31, before a 7-2 stretch by the Red Wolves gave IU East their largest lead of the half, 43-33.
  • Elliana Schaefer registered the final basket of the half as Keiser headed into the break down 43-35. 

Third Quarter

Keiser 58, IU East 78
  • The Red Wolves opened the second half with a barrage from downtown, netting three triples en route to a 10-2 start to the quarter.
  • Following a timeout by Head Coach  Pam Oswald, De Virgilio tried to slow IU East surge with a layup, but the Red Wolves continued to pour it on with eight straight points to take a 61-39 lead at the 6:41 mark.
  • Back-to-back baskets by Ellison-Coons stopped the IU East run and sparked a 7-2 surge for the Seahawks as they trimmed the deficit to 63-46 with 4:59 remaining in the quarter.
  • After both sides traded baskets over the next four minutes, IU East netted the final four points of the frame to take a 78-58 lead into the fourth.

Fourth Quarter

Keiser 88, IU East 95
  • Trailing 85-64 with 6:55 remaining, the Seahawks used a 12-4 run to cut the deficit to 13, 89-76. 
  • A layup by Ellison-Coons sparked the run and De Virgilio capped it with a triple at the 3:31 mark.
  • The Red Wolves quieted the Seahawks with a 6-1 stretch to push their lead back to 18, 95-77, with 2:03 left in the contest.
  • Keiser closed the contest on an 11-0 but it wasn't enough as IU East went on to win, 95-88.
 


Game Notes

  • Keiser dropped to 11-5 on the season with the loss.
  • The loss marks the first time the Seahawks have dropped back-to-back games this season.
  • Sunday's meeting was the first between Keiser and IU East.
  • With the loss, KU is now 4-6 all-time in games played on Sunday.
  • The 88 points were the Seahawks' second-highest scoring output of the season.
