No. 12 Football Uses Late Score to Push Past Ave Maria, 34-27, Clinches Share of MSC Sun Division Championship

The No. 12 Keiser football team used a late rushing score by Marques Burgess to push past the Ave Maria Gyrenes, 34-27, Saturday night on the road in a crucial Mid-South Conference Sun Division matchup. 

With the win, the Seahawks claimed a share of the MSC Sun Division Championship. This marks the third straight year Keiser has clinched at least a share of the title.

First Quarter
Keiser 13, Ave Maria 7
  • Ave Maria opened the contest with the ball after the Seahawks won the toss and deferred to the second half.
  • The Gyrenes marched down the field in nine plays to take the early lead on a 15-yard pass from Will Tate to Brock Summers at the 11:27 mark. Brendan Clark's extra point made it 7-0, AMU.
  • Johnathan Mosley and the Seahawks responded as the freshman kept it himself for a four-yard score with 9:24 showing on the clock. A fumbled snap on the extra point made the score 7-6 in favor of Ave Maria.
  • On the ensuing Gyrene possession, Wesley Scott picked off Tate's pass and returned it 14 yards to the Ave Maria eight-yard line with 7:48 left in the quarter.
  • The Seahawks capitalized off the turnover as Burgess punched it in two plays later to give KU their first lead of the night with 7:15 remaining. After Gagnon's extra point, the Keiser lead stood at 13-7.

Second Quarter
Keiser 20, Ave Maria 21
  • The Gyrenes regained the lead, 14-13, with 12:02 left in the half as Tate connected with Daniel Burke for the nine-yard score.
  • Mosley and the Keiser offense answered six plays later as the freshman found Caleb Walls across the middle for a seven-yard score with 9:10 remaining in the half. Gagnon's extra point pushed the lead to 20-13.
  • Tate put Ave Maria back in front, 21-20, with a 10-yard strike to Joshua Jenkins as 2:20 showed on the clock.
  • The Gyrenes took the 21-20 lead into the break after the Seahawks went three-and-out on their ensuing drive.

Third Quarter
Keiser 20, Ave Maria 27
  • The Gyrenes totaled the lone points of the third quarter at the 1:22 mark as Tate found Jenkins for his third touchdown pass of the night, this time from 12-yards. Clark's extra point was no good, making the score 27-20 in favor of Ave Maria.

Fourth Quarter
Keiser 34, Ave Maria 27
  • Keiser evened the score, 27-27, on their opening drive of the fourth as Mosley hooked up with Jerson Jacques for a seven-yard score with 11:41 remaining in the contest.
  • During the drive, Traionn Jones came up with a clutch catch for the Seahawks. The senior climbed the ladder on second-and-13 to give KU a crucial first down.
  • With under six minutes remaining in the contest, Michael Robinson delivered a huge spark for the Seahawks returning the Gyrene punt 21 yards to the Ave Maria 14-yard line. 
  • Burgess put the Seahawks back in front, 34-27, for good two plays later as the junior punched it in from six yards out with 5:13 left in the contest.
  • A sack by Scott on third-and-five on the ensuing Ave Maria possession forced a Gyrene punt.
  • The Seahawks were able to register two first downs on the ensuing possession to seal the 34-27 win over Ave Maria.

  • For the third straight year, Keiser has clinched at least a share of the MSC Sun Division Title
  • Saturday's contest marked the fourth meeting all-time between the Seahawks and Gyrenes
  • The win improves KU to 3-1 all-time against the Gyrenes
  • The victory marks the Seahawks first at Ave Maria
  • Keiser is now 4-1 on the road this season and have won nine of their last 10 regular season contests away from West Palm Beach
  • All-time, KU is now 14-5 on the road
  • Against teams from the state of Florida, Keiser is 20-3 all-time
  • The win pushes Keiser to 5-2 all-time in the month of November
  • Burgess, who entered Saturday's matchup as the nation's leading rusher, racked up a game-high 190 yards on 34 carries
  • Mosley totaled a career-high three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing) in the win
  • Marc Laurore and Scott both tallied a sack for the Keiser defense
  • Overall, Ave Maria outgained the Seahawks 343-323 on the night
