The No. 9 Keiser football team passed their first road test of the 2020 season Saturday afternoon, taming the Bobcats of St. Thomas, 49-10, in their Mid-South Conference Sun Division opener.

First Quarter
No. 9 Keiser 7, St. Thomas 0
  • St. Thomas elected to receive after winning the opening toss and quickly moved the ball deep into Keiser territory.
  • On second and eight from the Keiser 27-yard line, Kalani Ilimaleota looked for the end zone, but threw into triple coverage, allowing Sage Chen-Young to come away with his first interception of the season at the one-yard line.
  • The offense capitalized off the turnover, marching 99 yards on nine plays in 4:11.
  • Marques Burgess capped off the drive, which was helped by a St. Thomas offside penalty, with a 20-yard touchdown run. Logan Robinson connected on the extra point, putting Keiser up 7-0.
Second Quarter
No. 9 Keiser 28, St. Thomas 0
  • After receiving a St. Thomas punt to open the second quarter, the Seahawks offense found the end zone after a 3:18 drive that covered 50 yards in seven plays.
  • Eli Mathews connected with Jerson Jacques, who made a great diving catch in the back of the end zone, for a 22-yard score to make it 14-0 Keiser.
  • After the KU defense forced the third STU punt of the game, explosive plays led to another touchdown.
  • Antwione Sims broke loose for a 41-yard touchdown run, which finished off a six play 88-yard drive in only 2:24. On the touchdown drive, Sims totaled 75 yards on the ground.
  • A sack by Logan Wakefield put STU behind the chains early on the ensuing drive and the Bobcats failed to recover leading to another punt.
  • Nine plays later, the Seahawks offense struck again as Mathews found Traionn Jones across the middle from four yards out with 30 seconds remaining in the half to lead 28-0.
  • A 21-yard reception by Jones highlighted the nine play, 64 yard drive that took 2:37 off the clock.

Third Quarter
No. 9 Keiser 35, St. Thomas 3
  • The Seahawks opened the second half of play with the ball and needed just over two minutes of play to increase their advantage.
  • A 39-yard run by Burgess on second and 13 put KU at the STU 19-yard line. Four plays later, Burgess finished off the six play 55-yard scoring drive with a five-yard touchdown run.
  • Michael Robinson setup the drive inside STU territory once again thanks to a 33-yard punt return after the KU defense came away with yet another stop.
  • The offense managed just one play before weather came into play and put a halt to the contest.
  • Following a three-hour delay, the Bobcats were finally able to breakthrough on the scoreboard with a 24-yard field goal by Billy McConnell, trailing 35-3.
Fourth Quarter
No. 9 Keiser 49, St. Thomas 10
  • Keiser answered the Bobcats score with a three-yard touchdown run by Sims to cap off an eight play 42 yard drive to open the fourth quarter.
  • The Seahawks added one final touchdown on the day as Logan Good connected with Carlos Silencieux for an 11-yard touchdown with 10:45 remaining in the fourth. The scoring drive covered 21 yards in four plays across a 2:38 span.
  • The Bobcats put the final points of the contest on the board with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Thomas to John Israel-Cooper, making the final score 49-10 in favor of Keiser.

Up Next
Keiser remains on the road next Saturday as they will return to Miami Gardens, Fla. for a divisional matchup against the Lions of Florida Memorial. The contest marks the second meeting of the season between the two squads as Keiser recorded a 62-0 win in the 2020 opener against the Lions. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at Traz Powell Stadium.

  • Burgess tacked on 102 yards of his own on the ground
  • Mathews completed 12-of-15 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns, and also added 44 yards with his legs
  • Jacques led the Keiser receiving corp with 45 yards on three catches and a score
  • Overall, Keiser outgained St. Thomas 513-244
