No. 5 Women’s Lacrosse in Cruise Control in First-Ever Mid-South Conference Matchup

KU HIGHLIGHTS
  • No. 5 Keiser had quite the Mid-South Conference opener, making a statement with the 17-4 result over the Knights of No. 8 Marian while improving to 5-0 on their home field.
  • Melanie Brown once again matched a season-high with five points on three goals and two assists to lead the Keiser attack, which had nine different players score.
  • Maria Johnson joined Brown with a hat-trick, tying her career-high. The junior also was able to add an assist.
  • Bridget Reddington distributed well from behind the net all game for the Seahawks to record a game-high five assists, which also matched a season-high.
  • Keiser won the ground ball battle with 26 to Marian's 16, and goalkeeper Jessica Covell led the way in that category with five.
  • Madalyn Huber paced KU in caused turnovers with four, and also was able to collect a game-high seven draw controls.
  • The Seahawk defense had a season-low in goals allowed, limiting Marian to just the four goals on 18 shots. Covell earned her eighth win of the season in net, stopping six shots before giving way to Mickey Sherrill for the final 13:21 of play.
 
TURNING POINT
With the game tied up at 1-1 in the early going, the Seahawks rattled off the next six goals to seize firm control in the opening half and never look back.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brown opened the game's scoring off an assist from Reddington, but Marian was able to knot it up at 1-1 with a goal at the 27:13 mark.
  • After the Knights' opening goal however, the Seahawks turned up the pressure and were able to net six unanswered goals, with Brown notching a goal and two assists during that stretch of play that concluded with a Cat Raymond unassisted score with 13:13 left to play in the half.
  • Marian drew to within 7-2, but the Seahawks didn't let the Knights get any closer by scoring three goals within the span of three minutes to go ahead 10-2 with 5:11 until the halftime whistle.
  • Marian found the mark on a shot with 2:59 on the clock, and the two sides went into the break with the score at 10-3 KU.
  • Keiser put their foot on the pedal at the start of half two, with Reddington assisting on three of the next four Seahawk goals to see the hosts go ahead 14-3 with 22:36 still to play.
  • Though Marian was able to put one more into the Keiser net, the Seahawks scored the final three goals of the contest, two coming off the stick of Johnson, to cruise the rest of the way to the 17-4 victory.

Coach's Corner
"Our girls played so well today!" said Head Coach Lauren Bennett. "I am so happy with how well we implemented our new sideline communication tactic. We have been focusing all week on both offensive and defensive communication and today it really came together. It feels great to come out on top of our program's first ever conference game."
