How it Happened
Set One:
For the first time this season Keiser surrendered the first set in a match, falling to Marian by the score of 26-24. The two squads started neck-and-neck until Keiser rattled off four unanswered points to take a 9-5 advantage. The Knights outscored the Seahawks 6-1 over the next seven points, forcing a Keiser timeout. The host Seahawks came out strong after the timeout winning six of the next seven points to take a four-point advantage midway through the set. Later in the set with the score 20-15 in favor of Keiser, the Knights stormed back to even the set at 22 apiece. With the score even at 24 each, Marian claimed the first set after back-to-back kills by Kristen Buss and AlyxaKay Shields.
Set Two:
The Seahawks forced a guaranteed fourth set after claiming the five-point triumph in the second. Keiser jumped out to a 9-2 lead to begin the second set, behind three kills from
Nikki McKown. Once again Marian fought back to pull within three, 11-8. However, the Seahawks held the Knights at bay, claiming eight of the next 10 points to stretch their lead to nine. With Keiser leading 24-16, Marian won the next four points to force a Keiser timeout. Coming out of the timeout, Marian's Julie Hoying served into the net to end the set and give Keiser the equalizing victory. The Seahawks outhit the Knights in the second set, .250 to .093.
Set Three:
Keiser cruised to the 2-1 lead after besting Marian in the third set, 25-16. For the second consecutive set Keiser opened up with a comfortable lead, this time taking a 12-4 lead. The Seahawks held the Knights to a negative hitting percentage early on in the set. Once again, Marian proved resilient as the Knights closed the gap to within three midway through the set, 16-13. After a Keiser timeout, the Seahawks held the Knights in check by winning nine of the next 12 points to claim the nine-point victory in the third set. Keiser posted a solid .333 hitting percentage, while holding Marian to .114 in the set.
Set Four:
The Seahawks clinched the match with a three-point final set victory, despite yielding five of the first seven points. The Seahawks fought back after consecutive kills by McKown, evening the score at five apiece. The two squads battled back-and-forth with neither team able to break away. Keiser claimed the 13-10 advantage over the Knights, but Marian fought back to win four unanswered points to take a one-point advantage of their own. Keiser briefly held an 18-16 lead before Marian notched three unanswered points to force a Seahawks timeout. With the Knights leading, 19-18, Keiser recorded three unanswered points of its own to take a two-point lead and force a Marian timeout. The Seahawks held on to claim the fourth and final set by the final score of 25-22.
