Women's Tennis Falls in NAIA Opening Round 5-4

The #14 Keiser University women's tennis team fell to #19 LSU Alexandria in the NAIA Opening Round on Wednesday afternoon. The Seahawks conclude the year with an 11-9 overall record.

Keiser jumped out to a 2-0 lead in doubles behind wins by #3 Laura Ortega and Livia Toth 8-5 and an 8-6 win at #2 from Ana Pinto and Juliana Goncalves 8-6. The #1 tandem of Teodora Stanciu and Lola Garcia dropped one of the longest matches in tournament history 8-4 but still had a 2-1 advantage heading into singles.

LSU Alexandria quickly tied it at 2-2 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over #1 Ortega. However, Keiser retook a 3-2 advantage with a 6-3, 6-2 win by Goncalves but again the Generals tied it at 3-3 when Stanciu fell at #4 6-4, 6-4.

Pinto put the Seahawks back in front with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at #2 but for a third time on the day the match was evened when Toth lost at #6 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.

The match came down to the fifth singles spot where Garcia dropped the first set 6-4 but fought back to even it with a 6-4 win in the second. However, she could not prevail after a long day of tennis falling 6-4 and dropping the match 5-4.

Head Coach Daniel Finn said, "Anytime you invest so much time into a match like this and lose its hard to swallow. More than anything for the girls, they laid everything out there today and battled till the very end. We even had girls way down in sets only to come back and win a match and lay it out all out there. I think the fact that the girls were willing to battle for six hours in this match talks about their character and what they are capable of. We will use this as a learning experience and continue to push forward for better things in the future. The future is definitely a bright one for the program and next year will only be better."
