Match Recap: No. 3 Men's Tennis |

#7 Men's Tennis Holds Off #16 Cardinal Stritch 5-4

The #7 men's tennis team won a 5-4 thriller over #16 Cardinal Stritch on Monday afternoon in their home opener. The Seahawks improved to 4-1 overall on the year.

The day got off to a hot start for the Seahawks as they took #3 doubles in routine fashion when Nicolas Guerschanik and Shaquille Taylor won 8-1. Rafael Lenz and Arthur Bonnaud extended the advantage to 2-0 with an 8-3 win at #2 doubles.

The #1 pair of Luis Sanchez and Martin Martins nearly pulled an upset of the #7 ranked doubles team in the country. Despite leading and having match points, they fell in a tiebreaker 9–8(6). However, the Seahawks still led 2-1 heading into singles play.

Bonnaud at # 4 singles got things going again, winning 6–1, 6-1, extending the Keiser lead to 3–1. Cardinal Stritch would not go away though as Guerschanik fell at #1 singles 6-2, 6-1 getting to within 3-2 and tied the match at 3-3 when Ignacio Osse lost 6-3, 7-5 at #6 singles.

The tie would not last long though as Sanchez won his match at #2 singles 6-4, 6-2, putting the Seahawks back ahead 4-3. However, the Wolves tied the match back up at 4-4 when Lenz fell at #3 singles 6-5, 4-6, 6-3.

With that there would only be one match remaining that would be the decider, and as in the previous match against Lindsey Wilson it would come down to Taylor. Just like at Lindsey Wilson, Taylor came through in a big way, clinching the 5-4 victory with a 7-5, 6-3 victory at #5 singles.

Head Coach Daniel Finn said, "Today we didn't have our top stuff, but the best part is the boys really gritted this out and found a way to win against a very good Cardinal Stritch team. I have a lot of respect for them and their current ranking doesn't reflect their level. Just last week they beat two highly ranked teams and we knew going in that it would be a dogfight. In our minds we beat a top 10 team today and I'm very proud of the boys for finding a way. Just like I've said before our strength of depth showed today. Each day a new face shows up and accepts their role. I still believe we haven't scratched the surface of what this team is capable of. I'm very excited to see what the rest of the season has in store for us as these boys continue to improve."
