The #11 ranked men's tennis team won 6-3 over a feisty #RV Union College team on Tuesday night. This match featured plenty of firepower from the very beginning as both teams came out swinging in doubles by exchanging winners back and forth for over an hour.
Keiser got on the board first as #3 doubles of
Ignacio Osse and
Luis Sanchez won their match 8-3 giving the Seahawks the 1-0 lead. The next Keiser point came from
Rafael Lenz and
Arthur Bonnaud at #1 singles as they would take a 9-7 win from a thrilling display of doubles extending the lead to 2-0.
The second doubles of
Nicolas Guerschanik and
Shaquille Taylor played a match that saw no breaks of serve and would have to be settled by a tiebreaker to decide the match. Guerschanik and Taylor fell ultimately 9-8(3) and Union got on the board 2-1 heading into singles play.
The beginning of singles wouldn't disappoint as Lenz grabbed the next Keiser point at #3 singles winning 6-2, 6-1 extending the lead to 3-1. Â Sanchez would be a victim of a loss as he suffered a 6-3, 6-4 setback at #2 singles and Union climbed to within 3-2.
The match of the night featured #1 Guerschanik as it took over two and a half hours to play just two sets. Unfortunately, he came out on the short end of the match 7-6(5), 6-3, that had only one break of serve in the whole match and tying the dual at 3-3. With that loss Union was able to tie things up at 3-3.
Osse pushed Keiser back ahead 4-3 and within one point of the match after he won his #6 singles 6-1, 6-1. Then Bonnaud clinched the match at #4 singles with his 6-1, 6-4 win, giving Keiser the needed fifth point and lead 5-3 lead.
With 1 match remaining, Taylor finished the night as the clock struck midnight with his win at #5 singles 6-2, 6-2.
Head Coach
Daniel Finn said, "I'm definitely proud of the way our boys responded to some unfavorable conditions. We got in late last night and some of the guys were playing their first ever match on a fast indoor court. Also Union really came out early and slapped us in the face especially during doubles. You really have to give credit to them as they have a good team that is much better than their ranking and they refused to back down. Ultimately our strength is what showed most at the end and that is our depth. All the boys did a great job of responding and bringing a lot of energy and fight to the match. It was definitely a team effort tonight."
The boys will return to action on Thursday when they will face #3 Lindsey Wilson College in a top 25 matchup. Â Â
