Volleyball Splits in Season Opening Tri-Match

The Keiser University volleyball team picked up the first ever win for Keiser University athletics with its 3-0 win over Florida Memorial. The Seahawks fell earlier in the afternoon to St. Thomas 3-0.
 
Game 2 – vs. Florida Memorial
 
Set One
After falling behind 8-6, Keiser went on a 10-2 run led by a pair of kills by Nikki McKown and Megan Minke to lead 16-10. Florida Memorial got to within 18-15, but the Seahawks closed out the set 7-0 behind the strong serving of Minke winning 25-17.
Set Two
The Seahawks started out fast jumping out to a 9-2 lead, but the Lions responded cutting the deficit to 12-10. The serving of Nicole Papineau helped push Keiser back out in front 17-12, however Florida Memorial continued chipping away tying the match at 20-20. One last tie of 22-22 led to kills by Veera Hietala and Minke giving the Seahawks a 25-23 set win.
Set Three
Keiser again came out quickly taking a 15-4 advantage and would not look back going on to win 25-18 and take the match 3-0.
Offense
McKown and Minke both recorded seven kills in the match. Gida Victor was close behind with six kills. Papineau had 17 assists on the day.
Defense
Hietala had eight digs, while McKown had seven to pace the way. Victor had one solo and assisted block.

Coaches Corner
"It's great to get the first win of the year early. We did a lot of good things in both matches today and saw a lot that we need to work on. Overall, it's a good start to the season," said Head Coach Chris Taylor.

Next Match
Keiser kicks off their home slate on Friday, August 28 welcoming Florida National and Presentation College. The matches are set for 2:00 and 6:00 p.m.
