Baseball Season Ends With Regional Split

Northwood vs St. Francis

Northwood fought off elimination by holding on a for 10-9 victory in the afternoon contest. With the score tied 9-9 heading into the tenth inning, Luis Roman won the game with a sacrifice fly.

The Seahawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second on a Keivan Berges home run and an RBI single by Carlos Contreras in the third made it 2-0. Berges doubled the lead in the third with a pair of runs scoring on his double.

Northwood tacked three more on in the fourth, the first coming by an error and two more on an Andrew Danner double pushing the lead to 7-0. In the sixth, Contreras drove in a run with a single and a Gabby Mundo triple plated another as the advantage ballooned to 9-0.

St. Francis then rallied scoring three in the sixth, five in the eighth and one in the ninth.

Mundo, Danner, Contreras, and Berges led the way with two hits apiece.

Andres Caraveo picked up his seventh win going 1.2 innings not allowing a run while giving up just one hit. Berges got the start going four shutout innings striking out, five and giving up just four hits.

Northwood vs Lyon

The Seahawks could not overcome their opponents in a seesaw battle in the evening elimination game. With the loss, #2 seed Northwood has been eliminated from the Regional and sees its outstanding season come to an end.

Alan Carey was throwing shutout ball until the sixth inning when the Scots scored two runs taking the game's first lead. The lead lasted until the seventh when the Seahawks scored three runs on a throwing error.  Lyon answered with two runs in the eighth retaking a 4-3 lead when Berges was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded knotting the game at 4-4.

Lyon pushed a run across in the ten, but Northwood capitalized on a throwing error tying the game again at 5-5. However, the Scots platted five run in the tenth pushing out to a 10-5 lead, but Northwood would not go down without fighting. The Seahawks scored a run on a throwing error and a Mundo double cut it to 10-7, but could not get any closer.

Carey went ten innings striking out four batters, while only allowing one earned run. Mundo led the way at the plate with two hits.

Season Highlights

Northwood ends the year with a 40-14 overall which marks the most wins in school history. The team also won their first ever conference regular season championship and made their first ever appearance in an NAIA Regional.
