The Northwood softball team swept AIB on Friday afternoon in a doubleheader. The Seahawks took game one 7-2, and shutout the Eagles 4-0 in game two.
In game one, the Seahawks struck in the first inning on a Cassidy Miller homer to center field making it 1-0. In the third inning, Alyssa Cabral tacked on a run with an RBI groundout pushing the lead to 2-0.
Miller pushed two more runs across in the fourth on an RBI single to center extending the advantage to 4-0 and a hit by pitch made it 5-0. AIB pushed two runs across in the fifth getting to within 5-2, however Northwood got a run back on a sacrifice fly by Miller making it 6-2. The final run of the game came off an error in the sixth inning giving the Seahawks the 7-2 victory.
Nicole Granitto started the game going 4.2 innings striking out three batters and allowing two runs. Rachel Dirks pitched 2.1 innings of relief not allowing a hit or run while striking out a batter. Shanah Thomas and Miller led the way at the plate with three hits apiece.
Anne Diercks retired the side in order during the first three innings including six strikeouts before the Eagles got their first hit in the fourth inning. Northwood finally broke the scoreless game in the sixth inning with three runs. Alex Hartley drove a single to center field making it 1-0 and Nicole Lewis doubled platting two more runs for a 3-0 advantage.
The Seahawks tacked on a run off a passed ball in the seventh winning the game 4-0. Diercks finished the game allowing only two hits while striking out seven. Northwood outhit their opponents 7-2.
With the sweep, Northwood improves to 9-5-1 overall. The Seahawks return to the diamond on Sunday taking on Waldorf in a doubleheader in Cococa Beach. The games are set for 11:00 and 1:00.
