Pitching Leads Softball to Split With Cardinal Stritch

The Seahawks softball team split with Cardinal Stritch on Thursday afternoon in Cocoa Beach. Northwood took the first game 4-2, before suffering a tough 1-0 loss in eight innings.

Cardinal Stritch got a run in the first inning before Northwood came back with four in the second. Ryleigh Williams platted the first on an RBI double down the right field line tying it at 1-1. An error by the opponents scored the next run, and a two run RBI single by Cassidy Miller made it 4-1.

The Wolves got a run in the fifth at 4-2 but, Nicole Granitto shut them down winning the game 4-2. Granitto struck out two and only allowed one walk in a complete game.  At the plate, Kylie Waters led the way going 4-4 and Miller had two hits.

Game two featured a great pitching duel with Anne Diercks falling short in eight innings. Diercks struck out four batters while only allowing three hits and one walk. The run she allowed was not earned.

Alex Hartely singled to left field and stole second before Williams walked. However, Hartley was thrown out at third base getting Cardinal Stritch out of danger. The Seahawks threatened again in the sixth, when Shanah Thomas singled to the pitcher and stole second but was caught stealing at third.

The game went into extra innings and the Wolves prevailed in the eighth inning by a final of 1-0. Alex Hartley and Waters led the way at the dish with two hits apiece.

With the split, Northwood moves to 7-5-1 overall and returns to action tomorrow afternoon. The Seahawks take on AIB in a doubleheader starting at 9:00 a.m. in Cocoa Beach.
