The Northwood softball team dropped a pair of games in Clermont on Saturday afternoon. In game one, they fell to Mt. Vernon Naz 11-8 before dropping a 5-1 contest to #9 St. Xavier.
Mt. Vernon struck first with three runs in the first taking an early 3-0 lead. A Cassidy Miller homer got Northwood on the board making it 3-1. The Cougars extended their lead in the third to 4-1, but the Seahawks cut into the deficit in the bottom half. A Rachel Dirks RBI single made it 4-2, and an Austin Ray-Briggman single cut it to 4-3. Mount. Vernon extended their lead to 7-3 in the fourth but Alex Hartley pushed a run across in the bottom half making it 7-4. However, the Cougars added four more runs in the sixth upping it to 11-4.
The Seahawks attempted to rally in the bottom half with an RBI single by Hartley and a two run double by Tara Coletti getting to within 11-7. Northwood loaded the bases again in the seventh, platting their first run on an RBI walk by Nicole Lewis making it 11-8, but got no more runs falling in the game.
In the game, Northwood outhit their opponents 16-12 with Hartley going a perfect 5-5. Kylie Waters, Miller and Dirks all had three hits apiece.
St. Xavier got on the board first with a run in the first before Northwood tied it in the fourth on a Meagan Flores double at 1-1. However, the Cougars added a run in the fifth and three in the sixth winning the game 5-1.
Shanah Thomas led the way at the plate with two hits.
With the defeats, the Seahawks fall to 13-7-1 overall. Northwood returns to action at home on Thursday when they welcome Palm Beach Atlantic. The double header is set for 2:30 and 4:30 p.m.
