The Seahawks men's basketball team held off Florida National on Wednesday evening for a 90-86 victory. Northwood improves to 14-8 overall on the season.
The Conquistadors took an early 4-0 lead before the Seahawks knotted it at 6-6 at the 16:39 mark. Northwood took their first lead of the game at 13-11 on a Fred Mattison jumper with 14:43 showing on the clock. Over the next four minutes both teams exchanged six lead changes before the Seahawks pushed out to a 22-18 lead with 10:33 to go.
Florida National trimmed it to 24-23, when a pair of free throws by Deion McClenton sparked a 10-0 run capped by a Julian Smith free throw extending it to 34-23 with 6:25 remaining. Northwood closed out the half on a 7-3 run capped by a Chris Solomon three pointer at the buzzer pushing the margin to 47-31.
Coming out of the break, Florida National got to within 52-41, when Mattison layed the ball in starting a 6-2 push extending it to 58-43 with 15:18 left in regulation. The Conquistadors came to within 65-58 but a Solomon basket started a 9-2 run giving Northwood a 74-60 advantage with 8:49 left. The visitors got all the way within three with 30 seconds left but the Seahawks fended them off for the 90-86 non-conference win.
The Seahawks held a 41-38 edge on the boards, pulling down 14 offensive. The defense forced nine turnovers and had four steals and five blocks.
Mattison led the way on the night with a double-double on 21 points and ten rebounds, while Solomon chipped in 22 points off the bench. Ian Umpierre had five assists and Kevin McDuffie with four.
 
Northwood returns home on Saturday when they take on Southeastern. The tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
