Softball Gets First Win on the Year Against Edward Waters

The Northwood softball team played against Edward Waters at home on Friday afternoon in a double header. The Seahawks won game one 2-1 before tying in game two due to darkness 5-5.

In game one, Northwood scored the game winning run in the eighth inning on a single by Rachel Dirks. Cassidy Miller singled to get things going followed by a Nicole Lewis single up the middle putting runners on first and second with two outs. That is when Dirks pushed the game winning run across taking game one 2-1.

The Seahawks got the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RIBI single by Dirks making it 1-0

Anne Diercks held Edward Waters off the board till they tied the game in the top half of the seventh at 1-1.  Diercks had five strikeouts while only allowing three hits in six innings of work. Dirks led the way with three hits, while Miller had a pair.

Meagan Flores picked up her first win of the season on the mound pitching two innings striking out two while not allowing any hits or runs.

The Tigers struck first in game two with a run in the top of the first, before the Seahawks answered with two in the second. Allie Catapano singled to get the inning started, before Kylie Waters singled to left field tying it at 1-1. Northwood retook the lead when the left fielder dropped a blast by Katlyn Strauss making it 2-1.

The Seahawks tacked on three more runs in the third inning. Ryleigh Williams singled up the middle before scoring on an RBI single by Miller pushing the lead to 3-1. Dirks followed the trend with an RBI single of her own to center field extended the advantage to 4-1. Waters plated the final run of the inning on a single to first base giving the home team a 5-1 lead.

Edward Waters cut the deficit to 5-2 in the fourth inning with a run, before tying the game at 5-5 in the fifth.  Both teams stayed off board forcing the second game into extra innings just like the first one.

In the eighth inning, the Tigers had the bases loaded with two outs but Flores was able to get a groundout to short getting out of the jam. The Seahawks had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth with runners on the corners and two outs but could not the game winning across. The contest was then called due to darkness ending in the 5-5 tie.  

Nicole Granitto started game two going five innings striking out one. Northwood outhit their oppoenets 11-10.

Head Coach Chelsea Nowell said folloing the games, "the games today really showed how hard the girls have been working. I was very proud of the way they played today." 

The Seahawks return to the diamond on Saturday, February 21 Clermont Florida. Their opponent will be Alma, with games at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
