The Seahawks men's basketball team dropped a tough one in their white out game against Johnson & Wales 70-69 on Saturday. Northwood falls to 12-8 overall and 5-5 in Sun Conference play.
Northwood jumped out to an early 14-3 lead behind three baskets from beyond the arc by Andrija Sarenac at the 15:10 mark of the opening half. The Wildcats got to within 21-12 but a Fred Mattison layup started a 9-0 run giving the home team their largest lead of the game at 30-12 with 7:20 remaining in the half. The Seahawks held on for a slim 34-30 lead heading into the break.
Johnson & Wales knotted the game up at 41-41 and took their largest lead of the game at 48-43 with 13:43 showing. A Chris Lee jumper started an 8-1 run capped by a pair of free throws by Kevin McDuffie regaining a 51-49 advantage with 11:41 left in regulation. A back and forth battle ensued over the next six minutes, when Chris Solomon scored six straight pushing Northwood ahead 67-63 at 3:43 on the clock. However, Johnson & Wales closed out the game on a 7-2 run winning the game 70-69.
The Seahawks outrebounded their opponents 37-21, while shooting 55 percent from the field on 27-49. The home team connected on 8-14 shots from beyond the arc.
Sarenac led three players in double figures with 19 points on 6-8 shooting from three. Solomon chipped in 15 while Lee had 14 off the bench. McDuffie had a game high 13 assists and Mattison had a game high ten rebounds.
Northwood returns to action on Monday when they take on Florida Memorial. The game will be played at St. Thomas tipping off at 7:00 p.m.
