WEST PALM BEACH, Fl.---The Northwood University women's basketball team snapped their skid, by defeating Warner 63-58 on Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks improve to 3-11 overall, and 2-3 in Sun Conference play.
Both teams played a close first six minutes until the Seahawks used a 5-0 run taking a 13-8 lead at the 14:39 mark. Warner cut the margin down to 19-18, but Stephanie Granada and Emily May connected on their shots pushing out to a 23-18 margin with 7:29 to go. The Royals responded retaking a 24-23 lead, however, a pair of free throws by Lakeisha Blanson started an 11-0 run regaining a 34-24 lead with 1:22 to go. Northwood held on for a 36-30 advantage heading into the half.
In the second half, the Royals got to within 38-34 when a three ball by Claudia Reque started a 6-0 run making it 44-34 with 13:40 left. Later in the half, with Northwood up 53-48, a pair of May free throws sparked a 6-2 run extending the margin to 59-50 with 3:44 to go. Warner got to as close as at 59-56 with 1:39 to go but the Seahawks held on for the 63-58 victory.
Northwood outrebounded their opponents 43-35, while grabbing 12 offensive boards. The defense forced 15 turnovers, had six steals and three blocks by Mallory Burton.
Dana Gildea led the way with 16 points and five rebounds, while Granada chipped in 15 points, five rebounds and five assists. Burton had eight rebounds and Reque with four assists.
The Seahawks return to action on Tuesday evening when they welcome Ave Maria. The game is set for 5:00 p.m.
