WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Northwood University (Fla.) volleyball team suffered a pair of losses on the final day of action in the 2014 Northwood Hardwood Challenge, hosted at the Countess de Hoernle Student Life Center Saturday afternoon. The Lady Seahawks were swept by Southern Wesleyan (10-25, 21-25, 10-25), and then fell in four sets to St. Thomas (20-25, 19-25, 25-23, 18-25).
The Lady Seahawks offense struggled to find a rhythm against Southern Wesleyan, tallying more errors than kills during the match. Freshman opposite Lexi Schnapf (Venice, Fla.) recorded a team-high five kills, while sophomore outside hitter Nikki McKown (Lakeland, Fla.) and senior middle Sydney Fish (Kalamazoo, Mich.) each added four kills. McKown and senior libero Ti'Ana Fox (Tucson, Ariz.) registered 11 digs apiece. Sophomore setters Breanne Machacek (Deer Park, Tex.) and Nicole Papineau had nine and seven assists, respectively.
Against St. Thomas, McKown had a tied game-high of 15 kills with seven digs. Fish had 10 kills and three blocks, while Schnapf added seven kills. In her first start of the season, sophomore middle Markie Abbott (Venus, Tex.) contributed six kills and five blocks. Papineau dished out a team-high 38 assists, while Fox snared 15 digs in the loss.
The Lady Seahawks drop to 6-4 on the season after racing to a 6-0. Northwood will return to the court when they open their Sun Conference season at Ave Maria Wednesday night. The match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
