HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The fourth-ranked Northwood University (Fla.) women's soccer team rallied from an early deficit, but couldn't overcome a late strike from No. 9 William Carey, falling 4-3, in a non-conference match at WCU Soccer Complex Friday night.
In the 12th minute of play, the Crusaders cracked the scoreboard when sophomore Johanna Hubinette netted her first goal of the game to give William Carey a 1-0 lead. The Crusaders extended their lead to 2-0 with 28:18 remaining in the first half when Blair Guice delivered a strike past Northwood senior goalkeeper Matilda Hjalte.
With less than two minutes remaining in the half, the Lady Seahawks cut into their deficit as freshman midfielder Taylor Christian scored her first career goal for Northwood, making it a 2-1 game heading into the break.
At the 32:19 mark of the second half, Northwood found the equalizer as junior midfielder Linnea Lindmark scored off a pass from senior midfielder Amy Vaughan to knot the game at 2-2. Less than eight minutes later, the Lady Seahawks took their first lead of the contest as Vaughan fired an unassisted tally past Crusaders keeper Linfah Jones.
Less than 30 seconds later, Hubinette registered her second goal of the match with 24:52 to play, to pull the Crusaders even with the Lady Seahawks at 3-3. As the clock approached the 84th minute of play, William Carey delivered the back-breaker as Claudia Saucedo knocked in a pass from Guice, sending the Crusaders to a 4-3 win.
The Lady Seahawks outshot the Crusaders, 17-10, during the contest. Hjalte stopped two shots for Northwood, while Jones made a game-high 10 saves for William Carey.
The Lady Seahawks drop to 0-3 on the season, while William Carey improves to 3-0 overall. Northwood will return to the pitch to face Mobile Saturday evening in Mobile. Kickoff is slated for 8:00 p.m.
