WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Northwood University (Fla.) volleyball squad registered victories in both of their matches on day one of the 2014 Northwood Labor Day VolleyFest, presented by SpringHill Suites, Monday afternoon at the Countess de Hoernle Student Life Center. The Lady Seahawks sweep Edward Waters, 3-0 (25-10, 25-18, and 25-21), and then posted a 3-1 (25-12, 19-25, 25-19, and 25-20) victory over Concordia-Alabama.
Against Edward Waters, sophomore outside hitter Nikki McKown led the charge with a season-high 12 kills and six digs. Senior middle blocker Sydney Fish recorded six kills and three aces, while junior middle blocker Gida Victor had five kills. Sophomore setter Breanne Machacek dished out a game-high 16 assists, and sophomore setter Nicole Papineau added 10 assists.
In a thrilling win over Concordia-Alabama, five attackers for Northwood amassed eight or more kills, led by a double-double from junior outside hitter Veera Hietala with a game-high 13 kills and 12 digs. McKown collected a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs, while Fish, Victor, and freshman outside hitter Lexi Schnapf each tallied eight kills apiece. Papineau racked up a career-high 40 assists, the 20th 40-assist game in program history, along with seven digs and four aces. Senior libero Ti'Ana Fox snared a game-high 25 digs with four assists in the win.
The Lady Seahawks continue the best start in program history, moving to 4-0 in the 2014 campaign. Northwood will return to the court for the final day of 2014 Northwood Labor Day VolleyFest to play Ave Maria and McPherson. The Lady Seahawks will face the Gyrenes at 2:00 p.m. before closing the event against the Bulldogs at 6:00 p.m.
