DELRAY BEACH, FLA. ---The Northwood University men's soccer team upset #1 seed Rio Grande 3-2 in overtime on Monday evening to advance to the NAIA National Tournament Quarterfinals. Shoval Failer scored the game winning goal in the 91st minute off a cross from Theo Stamatopoulos.
The Red Storm struck first in the 11th minute when Jorge Andres Guinovart scored for the early 1-0 lead. The Seahawks knotted the match at 1-1 in the 35th minute when Alan McCann headed in a corner taken by Mark Hanlon. Northwood held a 6-2 edge in shots and 8-0 in corners during the first half.
Rio Grande scored 21 seconds out of halftime to regain the lead at 2-1. However, the Seahawks struck back in the 68th minute when Craig Mooney chipped a defender and Christian Costilla was on the finishing end tying it at 2-2.
Northwood's Failer then finished the game off in the 91st minute sending the Seahawks into a game against University of Texas Brownsville.
The Seahawks held a 13-9 edge on shots and 4-2 on frame. Failer led the way with three shots, while McCann and Hanlon had two apiece. Mark Dawson collected the win in goal.
Northwood's quarterfinal contest will take place on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Hilltopper Stadium in Delray Beach, Florida.
