No. 6 Keiser women's lacrosse made a statement early against No. 7 Missouri Baptist, pouring in five first-quarter goals to put the Spartans in an early hole from which they never recovered. The Seahawks rolled to a 15-5 road victory, improving to 7-2 on the season.
Tess Geiger opened the scoring with a wide-open lane in a man-down situation to put KU up with 8:44 remaining. A turnaround pass in transition from
Isabelle Vrensen found
MacKenzie Gibaud cutting in for her first goal of the day to make it 2-0. Moments later, Vrensen got a step on her defender and drove straight down the lane to make it 3-0. Down a man once again,
Baylee Walker liked her odds, rolling right around the crease and beating the keeper high to make it 4-0.
Emily McCall converted on a man-up opportunity with 28 seconds left to cap a stunning five-goal quarter for KU.
Shorthanded early in the second, Vrensen beat all her defenders in a foot race from the other side of the field before feeding Schweigert who got to pick her finish in the net and made it 6-0. The Spartans got on the board at the 10:28 mark, but a solo run by McCall a minute later had Keiser up 6-1. Following the ensuing draw control won by
Kate Griffin, Vrensen found, Geiger who ripped a shot into the upper netting for goal number seven. With 5:09 on the clock, Walker took advantage of the man-up situation and found a wide-open Schweigert who scored and registered her 100th career point. Missouri Baptist did get a goal back before the half as Keiser went to the break with a 9-2 lead.
Following an early goal by the Spartans in the third, Vrensen spun against her defender before finishing to the near post to make it 10-3. MBU took advantage of a man-up situation of their own to crawl back within six. A misplay by the Spartan keeper led to a Gibaud interception, who fed Schweigert for an easy goal in transition. The two connected again less than 30 seconds later as Keiser went ahead by eight, 12-4. Griffin did her best Vrensen impression to close out the quarter, spinning against her defender and scoring near-side to give Keiser the nine-goal lead heading into the fourth.
Griffin found Gibaud cutting across the face of the goal early in the fourth and Gibaud did the rest, sneaking a shot between the legs of the keeper to start the running clock. With just under two minutes left, Madison Terrell grabbed a loose ball close to the crease and scored for the Spartans to cut the lead back down to nine. Keiser would get the last word as
Reese Lynch hit Schweigert on a cut and Schweigert buried her fifth of the game to close out the 15-5 win.
Keiser returns home to practice for nearly a week before getting back on the road for Georgia where they will take on Indiana Tech on Friday, April 3. The opening draw control from Lupo Family Field in Marietta, Ga. is set for noon.
