The unbeaten run for No. 1 Keiser women's lacrosse came to an end on Friday afternoon in the Sun Conference Semifinal as the Seahawks fell to No. 10 Life, 17-15. The game was tightly contested from the start with Keiser's largest lead only getting to a three-goal advantage.
Jia Schweigert led the offensive effort for KU with six goals on the day. Behind her,
Milena Isturiz had three goals, while
MacKenzie Gibaud notched three assists. Isturiz did lead the team in groundballs and tied for the team lead in caused turnovers.
Keiser will now turn their attention to the NAIA National Tournament on April 30-May 5 in Savannah, Ga. The selection show for the tournament will be streamed
here on April 22 at 11:00 a.m.
Keiser 6, Life 3
- Isabelle Vrensen beat a double team before finding Hayley Frew who netted the first goal of the game
- Life quickly rattled off three goals to take a 3-1 lead with 10:29 on the clock
- With under five minutes to play in the first, Jia Schweigert rolled from behind the net before firing in her first
- Less than a minute later, Milena Isturiz broke through the defense before finding Schweigert for her second
- Off the ensuing draw control, MacKenzie Gibaud found Isturiz open in front of net who beat the keeper to make it 4-3
- Isturiz would score again with 19 seconds left after bouncing off a defender and firing home her second of the day
- Keiser would quickly work forward at the end of the quarter with Gibaud drawing a free position chance and scoring with one second left in the quarter
Keiser 11, Life 9
- Following a goal by the Running Eagles, Gibaud found Samantha Esher who netted her first to make it 7-4 with 10:35 left in the half
- Life would tally another before Schweigert intercepted a pass near midfield and took it coast to coast for the goal
- The back-and-forth affair would continue as Kathryn Moody scored for Life before Frew sank her free position shot to make it 9-6 with 4:15 on the clock
- Schweigert would get two more before the halftime buzzer, but it was Lexi Santiago with the final tally of the half to cut the deficit to two at the break
Life 16, Keiser 14
- Hannah Leon would tally the first of the second half for life before Isturiz answered on the other end for KU 16 seconds later
- Santiago cut the lead back down to one, but Jordyn Payne put her first on the board to make it 13-11 with 12:06 left in the third
- Following another goal by Leon, Schweigert would tally her sixth of the day to give Keiser the 14-12 lead
- Three consecutive goals by Moody would give the Running Eagles the lead with 3:30 to play in the quarter
- Santiago would convert again with 16 seconds left to give Life a 16-14 lead going into the fourth
Life 17, Keiser 15
- Isabelle Vrensen would cut the lead to one with a leaping shot in front of net with 13:37 on the clock
- Santiago would go down to the other side and put the Running Eagles back up by two with 12:21 remaining
- From there, the Seahawks would get limited chances as Life grabbed possession and ran the entirety of the shot clock when possible
- The Running Eagles would get a pair of saves from Ashley Hammel down the stretch and go on to win 17-15
- Keiser drops their first game of the season and now sports a 15-1 record
- The loss is the first in the series against Life all time
- The Seahawks fall to 2-3 all-time in the Sun Conference Tournament
- Schweigert's six goals are a new career high for the first-year member of the team
- She's now led the Seahawks in back-to-back games in the goals category
- Both Isturiz (3G, 1A) and Gibaud (1G, 3A) finished the game with four points for KU
- Isturiz had another strong day on the field with a team-best five groundballs
- She also tied with Brooklyn Kollar for the lead in caused turnover with each tallying three
- In the draw circle, Isturiz and Peyton Tomlinson each brought down five, followed closely by Frew with four
- Cassidy Green got the start for the Seahawks and recorded eight saves
- The two teams finished even on shots and draw controls while only being separated by one save
