The #6 Keiser University men's tennis team fell 6-1 to NCAA Division I Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton on Friday afternoon. The Seahawk concluded the regular season with a 17-3 overall record.
The Seahawks did not get off to a good start in doubles as the number two pair of
Luis Sanchez and
Guilherme Cunha fell 6-2.
Nicolas Guerschanik and
Arthur Bonnaud then lost at #3 to give FAU the clinching doubles point.
Rafael Lenz and
Shaquille Taylor were leading at #1 5-4 but due to NCAA Division 1 rules, doubles are stopped once the doubles point is clinched.
In singles, Sanchez came up short at #3 6-3, 6-3 to extended the deficit to 2-0. Taylor however got Keiser on the board at #5 winning 6-3, 6-2 to get within 2-1.Unfortuanetly, that would be as close as the Seahawks would get on the day.
#48
Martin Martins fell at #2 6-2, 6-2, and #50 Lenz lost at #4 6-4, 6-4 pushing the Owls lead to 4-1. Cunha making his singles debut in the sixth spot battled back from deficits in both sets but fell short 6-4, 7-6(4).
The match of the day would go to #47 Guerschanik as he battled tough taking the first set 6-1, but then dropped the next two by identical 6-4 scores to fall on the day 6-1.
Head Coach
Daniel Finn said, "We certainly did not have our best stuff today as we were a little shorthanded. Either way, give credit to FAU as they certainly play the big points a lot better than we did today. We will certainly use this as a good learning experience in getting ready for the conference tournament next week."
