The #6 Keiser University men's tennis team came from behind to stun NCAA Division 1 NJIT 4-3 on Saturday afternoon in Orlando.
NJIT started quick winning #1 doubles over
Martin Martins and
Guilherme Cunha 6-2, and #2 doubles over
Rafael Lenz and
Arthur Bonnaud 6-3.
Nicolas Guerschanik and
Shaquille Taylor won at #3 6-3 but it wouldn't matter as NJIT had already won the doubles point per NCAA division 1 rules and would lead 1-0 going into singles play. This would only be the second time this season that the boys have trailed after doubles.
"When we came out of doubles we were extremely flat and were not playing well at all," said Head Coach
Daniel Finn. "We huddled up and discussed things for singles, where I told the boys they would need to bring the energy, be able to adapt and come together and that is exactly what they did."
The Seahawks began to mount a comeback once singles began as #6
Ignacio Osse won 6-1, 6-2 to tie the match at 1-1. Keiser then took a 2-1 lead when Bonnaud was victorious 6-1, 6-4 but the Highlanders knotted it at 2-2 when Martins lost at #2 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Lenz quickly put the Seahawk back in front 3-2 when he won at #3 7-5, 6-2 but again NJIT had an answer taking #1 7-6(5), 6-2 tying it at 3-3 and having the match come down to Taylor for the third time this season.
Taylor as he done the previous two times this season, came out on top 7-5, 7-6(7) to secure the comeback upset win 4-3.
Finn continued to say, "I can't tell you how proud I am of the boys in the way they fought today. With all the adversity we faced over the weekend with mechanical issues and such the boys really had to be resilient and adaptive for this win."
"The fight we showed tonight was the main reason we came back and pulled this one off. The boys definitely deserve this win. We will enjoy this one for today and get back to the grind tomorrow as more big matches keep coming"
