Softball Sweeps Cleary in Doubleheader

The Keiser University softball team swept Cleary in a home doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Seahawks improved to 8-8 overall on the year.

Game 1: Keiser defeated the Cougars 5-3.
  • Cleary got on the board in the first with two runs before the Seahawks tied it in the third.
  • Shanah Thomas led off with a single to center and scored on an Alyssa Cabral single up the middle making it 2-1. A Cassidy Miller sacrifice fly to center knotted it at 2-2.
  • A solo homer to right by Jaryaca Baker to lead off the fourth gave Keiser a 3-2 advantage. However, the Cougars tied it at 3-3 in the fifth on a fielder's choice.
  • In the sixth, Ryleigh Williams was hit by a pitch, and then stole second and a Baker walk followed. A Taylor Beckmann sacrifice bunt moved both runners up a base and a Tyler Thomas single to center plated two runs to win 5-3.
  • Allison Williams picked up the win going four innings in relief with one strikeout.

Game 2: The Seahawks held off Cleary 8-7.
  • Meagan Flores gave Keiser a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double to left center, and a Darlah Cypress RBI single to center raised it to 2-0.
  • The Cougars retired the first batter in the second when back to back singles by S. Thomas and Heather Shapiro put runners on second and third. A throwing error pushed the lead to 3-0 and a Cabral sacrifice fly upped it to 4-0. A wild pitch and an error stretched the advantage to 6-0.
  • Cleary got on the board in the fourth with a run but Keiser responded in the bottom half with two runs.
  • A C. Miller RBI single scored Cabral and an RBI double by Flores pushed the advantage to 8-1. The Cougars pushed a run across in the fifth and five in the seventh getting to within 8-7 but got no closer.
  • Flores led the way with four hits helping Keiser outhit Cleary 11-7.
  • Williams picked up the win (4-3) going 3.2 innings in relief.

Up Next
Keiser returns to action at the Gulf Shore Tournament from March 4th through the 6th. The Seahawks face Auburn Montgomery and Middle Georgia on 3/4 at 9:00 and 1:00.
