The Northwood softball team defeated Cornerstone 7-6 in eight on innings on Saturday afternoon. The second game was rained out after three innings of play.
Cornerstone scored a run in the first and second inning taking an early 2-0 lead. The Seahawks struck back in the fifth inning with five runs. Back to back RBI singles to center by Kylie Waters and Shanah Thomas tied the game at 2-2. With the bases load, a huge double to the fence by Cassidy Miller cleared the bases putting the Seahawks in front 5-2. However, the Golden Eagles pushed three runs across in the seventh tying the game at 5-5.
The Golden Eagles scored a run in eighth inning taking a 6-5 lead. However, Allie Catapano doubled to left field scoring Thomas knotting it at 6-6. Tara Coletti had back to back game winning hits this time with a single to center field pushing Austin Ray-Briggman across winning the game 7-6.
Anne Diercks picked up the win pitching two innings in relief, striking out two and not allowing a hit. Cassidy Miller and Nicole Lewis led the way with two hits apiece.
Tara Coletti said after the game, "I heard my team behind me and I just wanted to come through with a hit for them and myself. This a team sport and I just put the ball where they needed it. They were the ones on the bags. My hits wouldn't have mattered if they didn't cross the plate."
With the win, Northwood improves to 5-3-1 overall. The Seahawks return to action tomorrow against Madonna in a doubleheader. The game times are set for 1:00 and 3:00 in Cocoa Beach.
