Men's Soccer Outlasts Cardinal Stritch

Robbie Gutierrez (@RobbG52)

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Northwood University (Fla.) men's soccer team took things down to the wire yesterday against Cardinal Stritch University in a 1-0 non-conference victory at Arrigo-Veceillo Field.

The Seahawks and Wolves played an even first half as both teams took multiple shots but nothing could find its way into the back of the net. At the end of 1 period of play the teams went into the half tied at 0, Northwood managed to out shoot Cardinal Stritch with 5 shots to 4. Both goalies were active in the 1st half as Jim Jones made 4 saves for Cardinal Stritch and Vinnie Cainth made 2 saves for Northwood.

It wasn't until the 63rd minute when senior midfielder Alan McCann headed a shot just across the line for the first goal of the game and it was the deciding factor out on the pitch Friday. Shoval Failer received the assist on the goal after he swung a rising line drive free kick straight to McCann to make the difference in the game. Northwood's work was not done though in the final 27 minuets a stout defensive and two more great saves by senior goalkeeper Vinnie Cainth sealed the deal for the Seahawks 2nd win on the year.

Northwood improves to 2-1 on the young season and will begin to prepare for Bellevue University (4-1-1) on Thursday, September 18th at Arrigo-Vecellio Field.
