WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Northwood University(Fla.) senior Jacob Alplund finished in second place overall to lead the Seahawks cross country team in the Sun Conference Championships at Fountains Country Club in Lake Worth, Florida on Saturday.
Alplund, a senior from Lund, Sweden, finished the 8K race in 25:57.82 to earn first team All-Sun Conference accolades.
The Seahawks finished in fifth place out of 11 teams.
No. 6 Embry-Riddle won the program's 10th straight Sun Conference championship and placed five runners in the top 10. They earned an automatic bid to the 2014 NAIA Men's Cross Country National Championships in Lawrence, Kansas on Nov. 22.
Alplund and Pedro Fonseca were both named to the Acadaemic All-Conference list.
Alplund was honored as the conference's Champion of Character award winner. He had a 4.0 grade point average over his three years at Northwood and earned President's List honors every semester.
Alplund was a Resident Assistant on campus and helped other students with tutoring. He participated in the SAAC, was an Outstanding Business Leader host, and the treasurer of the Student Government Association. Alplund also received the "Excel Star Achiever" award for accumulating the most volunteer credit hours amongst all students from 2012-2013.
Carlos Fernandez finished at a time of 30:48.15 while Fonseca finished at 31:06.47.
In the 5K on the women's side, Adelaide Wood led the squad with a time of 21:09.94
Angelica Diaz finished with a time of 21:48.77 while Kaitlyn Strauss registered a time of 22:36.35.
