Keiser Set for NAIA Baseball World Series

The 2017 Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series is set to kick off tomorrow at 11:30 EST. The event, which is a 10-team, double-elimination format, takes place in Lewiston, Idaho and will feature four contests tomorrow.

The Seahawks garnered a four seed in the World Series and will take on host team and fifth-seed Lewis Clark State. The contest is slated to begin 10 p.m. EST. Keiser is making its first appearance in program history in the NAIA Baseball World Series after winning the Kingsport Regional in Kingsport, Tenn. The Seahawks won the regional after downing IU Southeast in a winner-take-all game on May 18 by the final score of 9-6. Keiser's triumph came off the heels of dropping a tough 9-6 decision in extra innings the night before. The Seahawks squared off with IU Southeast three times in the Kingsport Regional with the other competition coming against Marian to open regional play.

Keiser is led on the mound by 2017 Sun Conference Pitcher of the Year, Daniel Garmendia. Garmendia has notched a program-record 10 wins this season with a 10-2 overall record. Garmendia boasts an ERA of 2.21 in 102 innings pitched with 88 strikeouts and 27 walks. Keivan Berges has come on strong over the last month, extending his pitching record to 5-1 on the year with an ERA of 2.73 in 62.2 innings pitched. Berges has punched out 64 batters and walked just 14. Brad Myott leads the team in batting average, hitting .342 with four homeruns and 46 runs batted in. Berges ranks second on the squad in batting with a .328 average, including 12 long balls and 42 RBIs.

Lewis-Clark State is the first opponent on Keiser's radar as the Warriors enter the NAIA Baseball World Series as the fifth seed, ranking 16th in the NAIA with a record of 35-13. The Warriors are led in batting by J.J. Robinson with an average of .341 with a team-high 19 dingers and 62 runs batted in. Seaver Whalen ranks second on the team in batting average with a .333 average with 10 homeruns and 48 runs batted in. The Warriors' top pitcher in wins is Kevin Hamann with an 8-1 overall record. The three starters combine for a 20-3 overall record.

Should the Seahawks win tomorrow they will play on Monday at 9:30 p.m. EST. If Keiser falls to the Warriors then the Seahawks will play on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. EST.
